Banham Zoo Banham Zoo News

More bad news I'm afraid

We are deeply saddened to announce that one of our three tiger cubs, born on May 1st, has sadly passed away.

Mother Mishka gave birth to all three cubs inside her cubbing box, and since their birth, our zookeepers have been keeping a close eye on the cubs via remote CCTV.

On May 7th, our keepers discovered that one of the tiger cubs inside the den had sadly passed away.

The first eight weeks are incredibly risky for tiger cubs. Following a post-mortem, it was confirmed that the cub had struggled to suckle from Mishka. The two surviving cubs are thriving and making excellent progress. They appear to be growing stronger and healthier with each passing day.

We appreciate your support and understanding during this difficult time, and our thoughts are with our keepers in particular.

That’s sad to hear and hard for the keepers etc losing a cub after their father died recently. But we know cubs are not easy to raise and it is good to hear the others are doing well. Hopefully a good outcome on those.

Members email announcing the return of the bird flying displays at Banham in the upcoming half term and a members event to introduce the birds back to the public.

“Join us from Monday 22nd May – Friday 26th May at 2:30pm at the Birds of the World Arena and celebrate the return of our wonderful birds as they take to the skies of Banham Zoo.”

Will enjoy seeing the birds of the world flying again.

Fun day out at Banham today - amazing weather and not too crowded.

Wasn’t expecting to see the new tiger cubs and the area around the house is cordoned off and signed accordingly which is sensible. There’s a new people shelter near the enclosure. Picture attached. The youngest female was out and about though which was nice to see.

Leopards were being fed in the morning which made for some impressive and noisy feeding.

The bird shows are back on for all visitors which was a lot of fun.

The weather was so warm even the maned wolf was out!

The small primate islands now have emperor tamarins and geoffroys marmoset again. There were silvery marmosets in the left hand side for a while but they are not there now and couldn’t see them in the small primate / bird walkthrough. Hope they are just off show.

Got a great view of the Sambirano bamboo lemur outside in the enclosure - I’ve only seen it inside or at the back of the enclosure before so that was a treat.

The otters are temporarily in the enclosure next to theirs while some maintenance work is done.

The new wallaby walkthrough is finished and complete with signage though it was closed today. Some pictures attached.

The young striated caracara have a new space in the aviary near the geladas. The bird walkway near the entrance was also open again so the parents are also back on view.

Good to see the birds including the flamingoes back on the lake.

Militha passed away earlier in the year I believe

I have been saying for months now I don't understand why the zoo do not communicate this kind of information, it's very upsetting. I had no idea of her passing until I found this comment. I care deeply about the red pandas at Banham and kept seeing posts in the Facebook group asking why there was only one red panda in the enclosure for months yet no response at all from the zoo. They post regularly if one of their animals passes, such as the tragic passing of one of the new tiger cubs and of emmet the sea lion a couple of years ago, however there is radio silence around Mithila and we are just left guessing where she has gone? The same with Sundara, I had no idea she was being transferred, I was shocked when I saw her on sky news this morning and wondered what on earth she was doing all the way in Newquay! I would have loved to visit her before she moved to the other end of the country. Again I couldn't find anything about her transfer until finding your comment on this forum. When trying to google about the passing of Mithila or Sundaras transfer I cant find anything at all other than your comments, may I ask where you find your information? I would love to stay up to date on such things and I have no idea why the zoo aren't sharing these updates when there are people who care deeply about the animals kept there. Thank you.

Hi Jade,
I think there's a reality of how much information can be shared on individual animals and some of that can boil down to staffing. My zoo has a full time public relations team of four people so sharing info is relatively easy. Banham may not have that and be limited to what an individual has time to post. Banham is a great place, I bet they don't mean to limit animal communication but sometimes priorities are not posting on Facebook but get subsumed by paying bills or cleaning drains or fixing the tractor that hauls the poop. You're fortunate to have such a great place to visit within reach and it's great that you care deeply. Enjoy that wonderful zoo!

You’re definitely right, banham is an amazing zoo and they definitely have a lot on their plates. I guess it’s just upsetting when they are regularly reporting on all sorts of things but the passing of a dearly loved animal by many visitors and the transfer of the zoos first red panda cub in a long time were not announced. I am just curious as to where the individual who posted the information around Sundaras transfer and Mithila’s passing is accessing this information as I would love to also be kept in the loop in future :)

It hasn't been directly mentioned yet, but since TNT bought it up, Kira, the young female Amur Tiger, has been moved off show in preparation for her eventual departure to Norden's Ark Zoo in Sweden later this year.

I messaged the zoo personally on Instagram and they replied within 18 hours. I found out about max the Giraffe and militha through this way. I also asked them about their potential plans to have a statue for kuzma and they said they were considering all options.

I think certain information is kept "off show" so to speak because it could have a negative impact. For instance since 2014 Banham have lost 7 giraffe, for a lot of different reasons. Even though these animals received the highest care and only died/PTS after all options were exhausted, there are, as we all know, these animal rights figures that would blast feem BZ & others. It is frustrating when a individual "disappears" without any confirmation however think people have to remember(not specifically ZC members) that zoos/safari parks are not obliged to answer "customer queries"

Thank you for letting me know I will definitely do this in the future. I’m glad to know that there is somebody else who wants to keep on top of such things. Wow a statue for Kuzma would be lovely.

This is very true, I hadn’t really thought about it that way. It’s unfortunate that a small group can take away from people who genuinely just want to know.

Absolutely, sadly it's amazing how much detrimental damage can be done by so called "animal rights activists" that wouldn't have a clue how to look after a hamster let alone wild animals. You will find though in some circumstances most zoos/safari parks will be very accommodating in answering queries as long as it's done sympathetically

Email to Banham / Africa alive members about the opening of the new wallaby walkthrough at Banham. Members tours at 1030 / 1430 tomorrow.

Marks the redevelopment of the former lemur walkthrough with new wallabies joining the collection. Not sure which sub species and whether there are more than one type.

I did enjoy the lemur walkthrough but weather wise there was a fair amount of time with nothing to see in the space so wallabies should be a bit more present for the visitors.
