Banham Zoo Banham Zoo News

Banham have kept Grevy's Zebras for a long time but have they ever bred one? I have visited several times in the past (mostly 1990's) and have seen at least two previous different males there (prior to this one) but no foals.

I'm afraid I cannot comment on that. I have no idea at all if they have had any foals.

The Grevy’s zebra studbook, maintained by Marwell, is available on-line from Marwell’s website. See the link below:-

Several Grevy’s zebra births are recorded at Banham; since this studbook only contains data up to 31st December 2008 then, possibly, there have been more births over the last two years.

@Nisha
The current giraffe at Banham are all hybrids or unknowns.
ISIS lists 1.5 (1.4 hybrids + 0.1 unknown).
Apparently, one was also recently born there ...

Which individuals are currently there?

As has been stated on here somewhere before, due to the gestation period it can be sometime before a studbook keeper's wishes can be followed (as the females are already pregnant!!) but the group at Banham is in a non breeding situation , the male listed in ISIS was born earlier this year and will be castrated at the the appropriate moment I am sure but there is no breeding bull at Banham any more.

Thanks for the clarification on the recent breeding events of giraffe and the status of the Banham giraffe herd.

I am aware that translating policy into action can take some time to produce the results envisaged. Clearly in the case of giraffe within European zoos; untangling the known pure-breds from the known subspecific hybrids and the unknowns has been a challenge on all involved in managing the giraffe studbook. It is an ominous task not easily accomplished. It remains a challenging task to keep track of all individual moves and changes.

Re Banham giraffe: I had been trying to discern from bits and pieces of info here and there (not just the ZooChat and I did check this News from Banham thread before asking) which individuals are currently in the zoo as when Giraffe Heights opened you had 6 individuals on site. There have been quite a few moves since early 2008 , (with both males and females in residence at times, e.g. M Jonathan ex Marwell now at Port Lympne).

I am happy to learn that the herd will eventually be an all female hybrid group. Hopefully, at some point in the future when the situation with hybrids and their breeding becomes increasingly remote Banham may eventually be in a position to establish a pure-bred breeding group of giraffe at either Banham or Kessingland. But I am sure that might be the long term plan (which may only happen in the medium to long term).

Some news to start of a new thread:)
Yesterday, the Horse keepers at Banham Zoo welcomed their first Suffolk Punch arrival of the year after a mare, born at the attraction six years ago, gave birth to her first foal.

The new addition, named 'Bazoo Xavier', and mother, 'Bazoo Roxanne', are set to go on show to visitors next month following the birth on February 27.

The arrival brings the number of Suffolk Punches at Banham Zoo up to nine, which has kept the rare-breed horses for the last 17 years.

Recent Visit

We visited last week. We wanted some pictures of the Snow Leopard Cub before its departure to Dudley, not my favourite destination. The weather was against us and I couldn't get any reflection free shots. The Cub and Mother looked well and contented, hope they make the most of it!
I did get a couple of good shots of the Howler Family, the Monkeys not the kids, They are my first uploads to the Gallery, do have a look!
We like Banham, wish they had the coffee shop open as well as the cafe though, the cafe coffee was a bit grim.

Apparently the transfer of the young Snow Leopards probably won't be until the Autumn according to the zoo's Facebook page

A male red panda has been brought into the collection. The male is from Paignton zoo and has joined the female maggie in the enclosure bring numbers too 1:1.

Hi Nisha,

Cheers for info, may be October or November before we make it back there, but will will return!

Might have to go to Dudley, not a favourite, to see if he's ok!

Fish

Some Cheetah changes according to the zoo's facebook page

1:0 "Kendri" was moved to the Netherlands last week

1:0 "Jack" (full brother of Kendri) is going to Colchester shortly

Once these have gone the breeding pair will return to Banham from Africa Alive! There last litter of 2:3 cubs will remain at AA for the time being

Cheetah 'Jack' has moved to Colchester, and Cheetah 'Joshi' (I think) has moved from AA! to Banham.

One of the recent additions to the Banham Zoo family is a baby female pygmy goat, born on 16th March 2011. Named Roberta after much consideration, she can now be seen playing and bouncing around the enclosure enjoying the lovely weather.
