Batu Secret Zoo Batu Secret Zoo news

Batu Secret Zoo seems to have finished the construction of renovated/new exhibits for bisons and false gharial. No idea if the bisons were moved to another exhibit outside of the safari area or their exhibit was upgraded and they're not moved. As for the false gharial, I have no idea. I guess they scrapped the plan to mix their young gharial with proboscis monkeys for some reason.

That’s exciting! I’ll be interested to see the False gharial exhibit. They’re my favourite species of reptile and I’m looking forward to Auckland Zoo receiving some later this year. They’ll be housed in a tropical dome given the New Zealand climate is significantly colder than what the False gharial at this zoo will enjoy.

@Nandito Do you know more about the otter civet?
Nope, I only just recently know about him when Giant Eland posted several pictures of Nemo (As he named him), hope Batu shed some light about him.

I assume that he could probably be a confiscated individual as with the case of other local mammals at the zoo like the echidna.

Today I have visited Batu Secret Zoo after several months brake. Below are several news from recent weeks/months:
- second Wolf Mona Monkey was born
- Black and White Ruffed Lemur give birth, baby and mother is keep in holding area but according to keepers will be visible in exhibit in early November.
- there is few Ring tail Lemur babies visible in Lemur Kingdom exhibit.
- Javan Mousedeer/ Kanchil born recently - first breeding for Batu Zoo.
- Chapman Zebra ans Colobus Monkey was born on 7th October
- yesterday from Surabaya Zoo 4 females of Agile Wallaby arrived. Batu have sent to Surabaya 2 males of Sitatunga as source of new genetic for Surabaya's group.
- Taman Safari Bogor sent their 6 years old Jaguar male "Bolivia" to Batu. "Bima" Black Jaguar male that lived in Batu for more than 10 years moved to TSI Bogor for breeding with their only female.
Example of good breeding cooperation among Indonesian zoos.

New exhibits:
- Bison house received new imitation of wood logs. Idea is to create look like North America traper cabin.
- one of old exhibit for Sun Bears is under demolition - after necessary works there will become a part of Brown Bear exhibit extension.
Good positive decision to give more space for brown .
- new naturalistic exhibit for Indonesian water turtles are in final phase of construction. Artificial rockwork are in process. This new exhibit that consist of 4 separate sections will replace 8 old small aquariums.
- exhibit for giraffes will receive more natural look.
All holding houses in the back of exhibit will be covered by artificial rocks. Idea is to replicate Kopje rocks that are characteristic for East Africa where Rothschild Giraffes lives. New male of Rothschild giraffe is expected to arrive soon from Europe.
- some modernisation will happen also in African Village and results will be possible to see just before Christmas.
- I have seen architectural design for Red Panda exhibit that should be ready in first quarter of 2023.
- unfortunately plans for new exhibit for Pygmy hippos and Mandrills were postponed until next year.

Thanks for all details, look forward to visit it around end of year,

Not sure if this is a recent upgrade or I'm just not being up-to-date, but apparently a pool has been added to Bertus' exhibit for him to chill in, as other fellow Indian rhinos always do.

Another wonderful exhibit upgrade by Batu Secret Zoo. Shame that there's none for Eco Green Park and Predator Fun Park.

Indian rhino's pool was build together with other part of rhino facility.

I have visited BSZ today and here are some news:

- Giraffe exhibit was enriched with some natural looking rock formation that covering night house.
70% of the job is done. Rest will be continued after Chinese New Year. Finally this exhibit looks more natural - good decision but why so late.

- extension of brown bear exhibit is still under construction (finishing of artificial cave and rocks)
New 500sqm part will be available for bears just before Christmas.

- In Nocturnal house new exhibit is created for Otter Civet - animal will move there within few days.

- one of long term empty exhibit is occupied now by Spotted Cuscus. Larger group of this beautiful animals arrived recently from illegal dealer facility (animal confiscated by conservation authorities BKSDA) .

- all Mouflons will leave zoo in January ( to Surabaya and Lembang) to make space for Red Pandas.
Of course this exhibit will be totally rebuild to meet Red Panda needs. Indoor exhibit with air conditioning will be provided.

Mouflons coming to Lembang Park & Zoo?! Sweet!!
I look forward to that and the otter civets!!

How many animals did they receive?

Apolon and Diana, a pair of brown bears, has their exhibit finished renovation, now 500 m2 wider with the new spaces from the demolished Bornean sun bear exhibit.

Quite a wonderful Christmas present for the bears.

After a year of preparation, the zoo's pair of Bornean sun bears has been transported to the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tanggerang, from where they will fly to Larnaca in Cyprus, where they will stay in their new home at Pafos Zoo.

Some bunch of news from yesterday short visit to Batu Secret Zoo:
New animal babies, all born in January 2023
- 1 Black eared Marmoset
- 2 Javan Muntjack
- 2 Babirusa, it's first successful breeding after few years break. Father is male brought from Surabaya Zoo in late 2021 and mother is female born in Batu in 2014
- 1 Mandrill
Exhibits:
- there is some works on artificial rocks in Giraffe exhibit, animals for bigger part of day stay in holding house.
- aviary of Rhinoceros Hirnbills (next to Proboscis) is under demolition. It will be replaced by new one.
- African Village will be closed for visitors on 30th January. After demolishing existing cages and build new one in new form whole new complex will be open just before Idul Fitri holiday in mid May 2023
- I have heard rumors that Beaver and Muflon exhibits will be demolished as well. Those two exhibits will be replaced by quite big aviary for marmosets, Sloth, Capybara and Ocelot.
Visitors will observe animals from elevated bridge going through whole new exhibit and from temple like viewing point that from where will be possible to see capybara swimming.
Unfortunately, nobody knows when construction works will start.
Planned new exhibit (very needed) for Pygmy hippos and Mandrils is still under question mark.
