Can you tell us which zoo it is?
personally i dont think the enclosure is a brilliant one for pandas. Plus the the abuse from caps and born free would only be increased. And plus Chester and Colchester failed to aquire them so i doubt london will get them. thats even if they want them with all the money they cost.
It must somehow fit into some form of mountainous exhibit (redevelopment of the site, not total make-over, I guess that is just too ... awesomely costly).
I still believe an South American theme would better suit the rest of the zoo. The zoo showcases wildlife from Africa (giraffe, okapi, gorilla), Madagascar (aye-aye, lemurs), Asia (Asian lions, Sumatran tigers, .. langurs) and South America (Sobell pavillions+).
South America would be a great idea, they could redevelop it for jaguars but that wold mean no other species could be housed there. Other than that theres the Spectaced Bear with coatis, monkeys and a few birds. Maned Wolves is an option aswell with spider or howler monkeys. I Have heard of a zoo mixing maned wolves with tapirs, anteaters, capybaras and rhea so maybe that would work.
the last I had heard about 6 months ago was that they were going to keep wolves on it! though im not sure how successful this would be.

That sounds like a cool idea - although after reading the mixed species exhibit topic in the general forum, I'm not too sure as these things seem to go wrong more often than I'd realised!
I think its fair to say that pretty much ANYTHING beats the wallaby idea though. I mean seriously, who came up with that one!?!?

You Ozzies may feel a bit cross for this (no pun intended here), but I meant it looks outta place in the whole London Zoo concept and it lacks imaginative thinking on the part of zoo management and curator.
I personally love the Planckendael outback exhibit. Kangaroo, wallaby, wombat, koalas ... But at least they have acres of space and are able to make it a total geo zoo.
Perhaps, our Antipodes friends can advise us what we need to do to get rarely kept species like wombat, koala, platypus on these shores. Patrick or Mark? Feel free to come forward!

I Think Chester are the only British zoo at the moment who i'd think could probably keep pandas healthily. I have my doubts though wherever chester will get them.
