Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Beardsley Zoo News

I recently saw a photo dated July 1st, 2013 that showed the Sandhill Crane chicks alive and well. I know my two most recent visits were after this date, but I now think the chicks were either hiding somewhere in the large exhibit on my visits, or were in their indoor housing.
Also forgot to mention this, but a Pronghorn died earlier this year in winter.

That's great news!:)

And that's sad news:( The zoo is down to one Pronghorn now right?

A little article about Dallas' new Ocelot kitten, whose mother was born at Beardsley (which is why I'm posting it).

You kind of forgot to post the article. :p
Here it is: Incredibly Rare Ocelot Born at Dallas Zoo | NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
But the weird thing is, Milagre, the "mother", is a male! Who's the real mother?
Anyways I volunteered today, and while there wasn't too much new at the zoo, I'll still report.
Unfortunately, Norbert the Bearded Dragon passed away recently. He was around 12-14 years old. He wasn't the most active animal, but it was always great to see him. :(
I also think the crane chicks died, unless they've been hiding in the shed for the past month and a half. :(
All 3 Mexican Wolves are now on exhibit.
I'm not exactly sure how many Amazon Milk Frogs there were (I always assumed one), but I saw 3 today.
The chain-link fencing walkway is still there. It might have to do with some accreditation issues.
I saw Sofiya today, and she is absolutely gorgeous! She is managing to deal with the heat, and is making use of her rocky cliffs. However, she sometimes performs stereotypical running.
They are expanding the Bobcat cage, which is not on public display.
I also have some info about a future Asian expansion. PM me for info.
Photos coming tomorrow.
Here's a nice video about the zoo from July 16th:

Well how embarrassing:D (trying to put a laughing face but not sure whether the tongue or smiley face works best).
The zoo doesn't seem to do well with crane chicks... You should ask a keeper about it next time you're there.
I remember seeing two frogs when I visited.
Explain what you mean by "accreditation issues".
I'm glad she's getting more used to her enclosure.
Why have they decided not to display the Bobcat again?
Feel free to include that Asian expansion info. in the reply to the pm I sent you:)
As always, thanks for the update!

Why have they decided not to display the Bobcat again?

By that, I mean it might just be something the AZA recommended/required. They had their inspection that determined accreditation this year, which they passed.
They never displayed Beeze the Bobcat. He is an education animal, and therefore has always been behind-the-scenes. If you're interested, his cage is behind the Cotswold Sheep enclosure.

Oh okay.
Are the rheas still there? And have they even begun constructing the new enclosures for Pampas Plains yet?
Oh, that's what's back there. Is it possible at all to see him from the main path viewing the sheep pen? And I thought the elderly Dexter Cattle was back there now?

The Greater Rheas are still in the farmyard beside Lucy the Dexter Cow. The zoo intends to break ground on Pampas Plains in September.
Katie the 20 year old Dexter Cow is directly behind the sheep enclosure and is sometimes viewable from there. Beeze and the zoo's hawks are behind the cow paddock.

Apparently, Beeze the Bobcat has been performing in shows all summer long. I'm quite upset, as the zoo never gave any information about this, except in early spring, when they said he'd be performing in a show this summer. But they didn't notify the public at all when he'd be performing! Now I'm probably not going to be able to catch one of the shows.
Besides the camels, the zoo has been doing a poor job at highlighting the new arrivals, at least IMO. No photos of the Mexican Wolves or Amur Leopard taken by the zoo themselves were put on Facebook, and there was no mention of Beeze's show once it began.

Curious that ... seems like 2 species a zoo would want to shoot about!

Well both the wolves and Leopard got large media hype but while photos would appear in articles and such, nothing ever appeared on the zoo's website (which is horrible out-dated as it is) for some time. And even when something did appear it was just a page for the Leopard, which came a while after the wolves, and they never even deleted the Andean Bear page which is what the Leopard replaced! At the rate Beardsley's site goes, the new Andean Bears will be here before the page is ever deleted!

Kifaru Bwana and ThylacineAlive- The zoo made a large media hype about the leopard, but very little hype about the wolves. And we waited more than 8 months for new wolves, and more than a year for a replacement animal (the leopard) for the bear!
I really hope that when Pampas Plains opens next year, the zoo updates the animal list on their website. There actually are animal pages for the Bobcat and Amur Leopard, but can only be accessed in the "Image Gallery," in the "For Kids" section of the website.

To be fair, the zoo had to build an entire new housing building and pretty much change the entire enclosure to make it fit for the Leopard. Whereas, they only needed to get the wolves to be able to display them.

I completely respect how they renovated the exhibit to make it suitable for the leopard; I'm saying that they could at least post some photos on FB about the leopard. And on the other hand, they had to acquire lots of permits for the Mexican Wolves, as they're potentially releasable species.

I spent the last official day of summer at the zoo today, and noticed a few changes:
The camels are obviously gone, and the fence that was around their pen was taken down. According to a notice at the zoo entrance, they were from Florida originally, and went back there.
Two new signs about the South American Adventure expansion are around the zoo near the Llama exhibit. One indicates the layout of Pampas Plains, and the other is to show where the future Andean Bear exhibit will be located. Groundbreaking on Pampas Plains should take place very soon.
The second Amur Leopard habitat might be open, as the sign that indicated that construction was still going on was taken off. However, there is no mesh fencing on that side, and it didn't see Sofiya could access that enclosure at the moment. Speaking of which, Sofiya was not outside today, though I occasionally saw her pacing through the door into her indoor quarters.
The Nigerian Dwarf Goat kids born in April and May are becoming increasingly rambunctious, and are taking plenty of opportunities to headbutt with other members of the herd.
The Diamondback Terrapin tank is now closed for the remainder of the year.
The juvenile Yacare Caiman was taken out of his exhibit with the Amazon Tree Boas. I have no idea if he was relocated to another area of the zoo, or if he was transferred to another facility.
Rosario and Zuele, the Black Howler Monkeys, are back indoors for the summer.
