At the start of this year a pair of Lowland anoas (Bubalus depressicornis) arrived from Chester Zoo. A male named Teal'c and a female named Oana, they were shortly housed at Tierpark Berlin before moving to Zoo Berlin.

At the end of April an Eastern Ring-tailed vontsira (Galidia elegans elegans) was born.

Two months ago a Black-rumped agouti (Dasyprocta prymnolopha) was born, according to ZTL this is a zoo first breeding for Zoo Berlin.

They also moved 1,0 short-beaked equidna there from Berlin Tierpark (the male which did not get chosen by the female I'd assume).

A king penguin chick has hatched!

Zoo Berlin on Instagram: "HAPPY between mama‘s FEET: Nachwuchs bei den Königspinguinen! HAPPY between mama's FEET: addition to the king penguin family! A few weeks ago, the keepers were amazed: an egg in the fold of the belly. A small sensation! The last time two adoptive fathers tried to hatch an egg was in 2019 — without success. King penguins don't build nests. They carry the egg under the belly fold and incubate it on their feet. On Saturday, the egg shell cracked in our penguin house and hatched the currently fluffiest new family member. After hatching, the young animal continues to be kept warm and protected by mom and dad. We sincerely hope that the rearing of this mini succeeds — so it is now: fingers crossed for the little penguin!!!! With a little luck, you can see the sweet fluff in the penguin house, between the waddling feet peeking out from time to time. #königspinguine #kingpenguin #zoolife #babyanimals #cuteanimals #cutenessoverloaded❤ #babypenguin #wildanimals #zoo #berlin #berlinzoo #zooberlin #germany"

Does anyone know if the bengal slow loris in the nocturnal house is actually a bengal? Zootierliste has them as a holder for Nycticebus coucang but not for Nycticebus bengalensis.

Visited yesterday - it's looking good as a whole, a few bits that need work for sure but overall it's holding up well. Saw the new pagoda complex - they were taking investors around at the time of my visit so bits of it were shut but I saw all three species exhibited. Really lovely area and one that seems good for the animals, but I must say I thought it would be a bit larger in parts, but maybe I didn't get around to seeing the entire rhino exhibit for example. Keepers were trying to bribe one of the rhinos into coming near the investors with a carrot incidentally but the rhino wanted absolutely nothing to do with it :P.

One issue that might cause a few problems later is the fact that the warty pigs have figured out how to lift the trapdoor separating the rhino exhibit and theirs (photos in the gallery in due course) and hence might be in danger of entering the rhino exhibit and finding out a thing or two about angry Indian rhinos. That should probably be dealt with as soon as possible if it isn't intentional. In other news (maybe not new but...) coucals unsigned in with the fiscals.

Sadly 43-year old female Common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) Lilly was euthanised on the 12th of September. Her health started to decline and she had stopped eating, a CT scan revealed a tumour the size of a handball. During the surgery it was determined that the tumour could not be removed, therefore the decission was made to euthanise her.

Three European brown bears have arrived to Berlin Zoo from Orsa Rovdjurspark in Sweden which is soon set to close. It definitely feels right for there to be brown bears in Berlin again!

Zoo Berlin on Instagram: " Die Berliner Bären sind zurück. The Berlin bears are back. As of now, three European brown bears – Lucifer, Lillebor, and Momoa – reside at Zoo Berlin. These animals come from the Swedish predator park Orsa, which will soon have to close its doors. ➡️ Currently, the four-year-old bear brothers are still adjusting to their new home, complete with rock dens and dead wood. The bears should be ready for visitors by the start of the Berlin fall vacations at the latest. In addition to the animals themselves, you can look forward to an interactive exhibition all about the brown bear, hibernation, human-animal conflicts, and more. Tip: With a little luck, you might catch a glimpse of the new arrivals already. © Orsa Rovdjurspark // Zoo Berlin #braunbären #zooberlin #berlinerbär #brownbear #zuwachs #neueszuhause #orsarovdjurspark #bear #bärenbrüder"

I'll be visiting berlin zoo for the first time if all goes well soon, i was wondering if anybody knows how much ill really be missing from the aquarium now that renovations are going on? On the site it states the third floor of the amphibians and insects, is this a noticeably chunk of the aquarium or more like a room?

Also, i'll be looking for the steatocranus sp. ultra slender, a species zootierliste states they have. Does anybody know where i can find these so i don't miss them? Thanks in advance

The top floor is probably the least expensive of the three. You'd be missing out on the amphibians and inverts but overall there is less there than on the other two, at least that was the case when I visited in 2018.
