Berlin Zoo Berlin Zoo news 2024

Are there any feedings that aren't signed on the website? I'll visit soon with a friend, and we'd be especially interested in kiwis, nocturnal animals and felines (especially oncillas, margays and jaguars).

As far as I am aware, no. The kiwi area is very dark indeed, even when your eyes have adjusted it is hard to make much out.

When does the lights go off in the Creatures of the Night? I will be visiting the zoo very soon after two years and I don´t want to miss anything. :D
As mentioned, they turn off from approximately 9:15, with the last ones shut off by around 9:45. The lights go off from the 'furthest' exhibit first, ending with the aardvarks - enter through the Elephant gate and head straight there, as it'll give you the best and probably only chance of actually seeing a tenrec. However be aware the echidna rarely, if ever, ventures out before the lights turn off

I can't give exact times, but the echidna at least was fed in the morning during my last visit. The smaller felines are fed midmorning as well, 10:30 is the standard time. The big cats are fed late afternoon, any time between 4 and 5. As for the kiwi, once your eyes adjust you should have no issue spotting them. If it's quiet you also should be able to hear them to help with directing your eyes. I find there's usually at least one that hangs around the near-left of the glass, and on my recent visit had the privilege of watching several foraging in that area.

I recall with my visit in 2022 ... I went around the house again in search of the kiwi only to realise the viewing booth [as it felt like] was in the Africa section oddly enough.
The first time I went in I had no trouble seeing what was in there ... just couldn't see a kiwi.
But that is to say second time around when I went in ... the kiwi was happily plodding about! I only got a glimpse of it before its descent into the foliage .... [no pictures were taken!] but still I remember it fondly as the end of my 'kiwi virginity'! [Sorry Manu!]

Hi New to the thread, wanted to get some info on the species list that is at Berlin Zoo. They have the largest collection of species in the World. I wanted to see the list bit it only showed a handful. Anyone have a list on hand or where I can find it ?

You can find the list on zootierliste, go in expert search, write in the search bar "
Berlin (Zoologischer Garten)" and then select: class-mammals\birds\reptiles....

Otherwise I can send you a mammals+birds list but you'll have to wait at least till tomorrow

Thank you!! That would be great!!

Is possible that one or more red duickers are currently placed in some backstage paddock? (behind parma kangaroos/emus and nandus)

Giant panda Meng Meng has given birth to twins:

From socials:

They are here! You've been waiting for this as eagerly as we have... Meng Meng had offspring for the second time yesterday at 1:03 p.m. and 2:19 p.m.

Both cubs are in good health and are being lovingly cared for around the clock by their mother and the experienced panda team. Now it's time to keep your fingers crossed for the critical first few days!

Giant panda cub update:

From socials:

The panda twins have successfully survived their first five days!

Thanks to their mother, Meng Meng, and the great panda team, they are developing magnificently. Cuddling, drinking, and even more cuddling are the order of the day for the twins.

Every hour or so, the two cubs take turns drinking and cuddling with their mother. They are still completely helpless, but the care and their mother's milk give them the strength they need.

Hello! I just joined :) I'm visiting some European countries in October and I wanted to ask if the Berlin Zoo is usually too busy on Saturdays? I can go either Saturday or Monday and I'd like to avoid large amounts of people and kids since I really want to appreciate the animals and even draw some of them. However on Monday I have less time since I'm leaving Berlin that day.
Thanks!

Weekends are definitely busier especially during holiday times (I am unsure of whether Germany has an October break like the UK), but the zoo is large enough that even the busiest days result in people being fragmented quite well around the site. The only places you might have problems with are the cat house and pandas, but you can still avoid large crowds by timing your visits (this does admittedly take some luck and often a lot of backtracking).

Personally, I would make the most of having a full Saturday and even if it is uncharacteristically busy you will doubtless still find it just as enjoyable.

Thank you! That does sound like the better idea. :) I'm getting my tickets now!
