Berlin Zoo Berlin Zoo news 2025

It’s been reported that white-bearded gnu will join the beisa oryx and grevys zebra. Then after some renovation work the enclosures behind will be home to dromedary camels, Somali wild ass and addax!
Mixed bag in the replacements. Fingers cross they return someday at the Tierpark

Oh of course! Making room for the rhinoceros complex. Shame to lose those species, especially the eland, but it will definitely add to that area of the zoo and allow for both collections combined to maintain the diversity. Interesting the camels are moving though, have they specified whether it's all of them or not?
I doubt the whole herd is moving because within the mix and taking under account how many dromedaries they have at the TP even the union of both exhibits would be tiny for all those animals! :p
I guess we will have to wait and see but I hope the Tierpark doesn't stop housing Somali wild asses, wildebeest, addaxes,...

I’m sure the two new themed exhibits will be an improvement for the general zoo visitors and will showcase some nice species. It’s only us zoo nerds who will miss a little less diversity between the two collections.

How are the bongo and okapi renovations progressing? Has there been any information on what will move the the area previously occupied by black rhino etc?

any updates on the big cat extensions?

The expansion of the habitats for tigers, leopards and jaguars is underway. Last time I used a satellite software, I saw traces of construction.

What is the long term plan for orang utan at Zoo Berlin?
They will eventually be completely phased out, with the new ape house focusing entirely on gorillas and, if my memory (and German) serves me right, potentially bonobos too. There were rumours, likely based on the now scrapped mid-2010s plans, that they would move the orangs to the Tierpark. But it seems more likely there will eventually be no orangs in Berlin at all

I don’t expect it will be forever but given plans I expect they’ll be at least a decade without Orangs in Berlin.

The official communication suggests there will only be Gorillas in Berlin Zoo for the near future. And as there are still some rather costly plans and projects, this could well last a few decades before an ape species (or even two) return(s).

As for the Tierpark, they already have problems to finance their respective share for elephant building and rhino station. Plus, they heavily rely on public funding - which in turn now seems rather uncertain. So I wouldn't expect too much here either. Which is kind of sad. If there ever was a chance to have apes again it is now that the Zoo phases 3 out of 4 species out.

It's probably for the best, anyway. I don't think the facilities at Berlin were anything special for the apes.
