Yes i do get what you are saying Zoo Giraffe! I just learn to ingnore them as they dont really know what they are on about or about the animals.
I thought Dartmoor wasnt that bad, when i went.
Has anyone seen the Lion Enclosure at Flamingo Land im hoping to go to it during the Summer as it looks really impressive. Can anyone say anything about it?

Flamingo lands lion enclosure is quite impressive its about 2 acres with a rockface in the enclosure and a large indoor area aswell as the individual pens. They have lions from longleat a mother father and their offspring, their hoping to build a large pride , think its one of the largest zoo based lion enclosures though i woman at chester said theirs is one of the biggest but its not bigger than Flam land.

I am off in two weeks so will get some photos :).

Sorry KarenZOO i was basing this thread on Zoo enclosures im afraid.
Thanks for that Camel Leopard i knew that Kumali and the lioness and cubs had gone there i was wondering if any other lions have been brought into the pride?
Ive heard that the enclosure can hold up to 20 + lions from the pics ive seen that seems to be quite true!
Anybody know about any extra lions?
Regards

well in the uk i've been to chester zoo, bristol zoo, Dudley Zoo  and the west midlands safari park, and i guess i would have to say the west midlands safari park because they are about as natural as you can get for a captive environment in my book.

The Kanha tiger exhibit at the IOW Zoo is probably my favourite big cat enclosure, although SotJ is a close second, if only for the astonishing indoor rainforest section.

I went quite a few years ago, so they must be new, they didn't even have the white lions then, oh and btw considering the zoo's previously mentioned its better than them, and i don't visit zoos anymore because i have standards

Don't see how you can have standards if you rate WMSP higher than Bristol or Chester. Otherthan the lion enclosure (not white lion one) their facilities are terrible for big cats.

Care to explain that statement further?

yes, it wasn't a dig at anyone just that i hate to see animals in cages

i think that the lion enclosures at bristol are far too small and boring in my opinion (for the lion)

if i'd have known i would get jumped on i wouldn't have bothered responding to this thread at all

I was not going to post this but after seeing another post of yours I couldn't resist anymore.

I find it strange that you claimed you were a fan of Craig Busch yet you then state you don't like animals in a cage?

Where did your change of heart occur, because you seem to still be a fan of Craig Busch yet their facilities are disgusting?

yes, but that "standards" comment makes it seem that you think you are above every one on this site...

Let's compare WMSP against Chester and Whipsnade shall we?

Lion enclosure
Chester's is set in mature woodland, long grass, without the mesh fence it's a beautiful setting.

Whipsnade is trying to replicate the savannah and the surroundings are magnificent.

WMSP is the best cat enclosure there, but I don't see how a 15foot tall solid metal fence is as close to natural surroundings as you claimed in your original post in this thread. WMSP's white lion enclosure is quite small (especially for the number of animals).

Tiger enclosure
Chester's is extremely well planted and has climbing oppurtunities and Whipsnades is set in thick woodland. This overhead cover is very important for a deep forest dwelling dwelling species such as Sumatran or Amur tigers. WMSP has mowed lawns with very few plants for their tigers...

Oh and since you said you have a problem with animals in cages, do you have a problem with WMSP's consistent breeding of white lions and white tigers to use as a drawcard each year? A lot of the white lion cubs will be inbred now and white tigers as a type are historically inbred.

You seem to have been suckered into the "safari parks = good because they are bigger" logic, when it quite a lot of cases it's just not true.

okay firstly i have never been to whipsnade so i can't possibly comment, secondly it wasn't me that mentioned standards that was someone else, and thirdly i did say that i had visited some of these zoo's years ago, and fourth i don't think that i am above anyone on this forum perhaps i did word it wrong, and as for the person who mentioned craig busch i believe that i have mentioned about that in the new zealand forum, i believed that he was trying to do something different, i was wrong so bite me!, while i hate to see animals in cages and stuff i accept that it is a necessity in this day and age.

Sorry to be the one to stop the argument but as i set up this thread i think i should. People have loads of different opinions and i do have to say i agree with most of things CZJimmy has said, Especially about the White Lion and White Tiger breeding which i think is a very big dissapointment and is nto helping the cats one bit, And something should be done about it.
And i agree with you about the Craig Busch issue but that has been dodgy from the start.
So lets get back to the point of this thread ;)
Lets see Best Lion Enclosure - Whipsnade's Lion Enclosure
Best Tiger Enclosure - Whipsnades Tiger Enclosure + Howletts has been considered by quite alot of people do be very good too.
Best Jaguar Enclosure - Which i think has been decided as Chester's Spirit of the Jaguar

Now what about Leopard Enclosures? Any ideas, I would say Howletts Enclosures they are far away from the public very tall, lots of climbing oppurtunities and rocks and pools etc.
I did also Like Banhams Sri Lankan Leopard Enclosure and if a howletts style enclosure was perhaps added it would be excelent.

And also Small Cat Enclosures? That would probobly be Howletts + Port Lymne again as i thought there Fishing Cat enclosures and there others where fanatstic at Port Lympne and for Howletts Aswell.

Any other ideas anyone?
Thanks for contributing everyone.

I like Whipsnades lion and tiger but again they do have the room !! Love the big window in the lion enclosure!

Has anyone been to Banham since they opened their snow leopard enclosure, we went when it was still being built and was looking impressive?

At chester i loved the maned wolves ( i know their canine but i couldn't help mentioning them, lol ) enclosure, which is now the butterfly house. I thought it was really good, a lot of platforms. poles and enrichment. They could of cut the bush a bit but i thought it was a really good enclosure.
