I do wonder how many of the people suggesting London or Edinburgh, have ever visited Peak wildlife park as that is one impressive enclosure, admittedly it's the only reason anyone would visit the place now.

Also Marwell doesn't have the greatest history with penguins, but then I know nothing

Is this the enclosure you're talking about at Peak WP.

I have not seen that many, no.As far as Britain goes,I have only seen penguins at:
London Sea Life
London Zoo
Whipsnade
Woburn
Colchester
Marwell
Longleat(I know they no longer have any)
Bristol
There may be more that I cannot remember, but real only eight.I am not the best to judge.

So Edinburgh and Living coasts being judged by photos only. From my experience not a great idea as the camera only shows what the photographer, wants to show you its far better to see something with your own eyes. In that list only one I rate and that is Bristol, but then I don't know anything about things with feathers.

A very small part of it as it's two pools, one with under water viewing. In the Blackbrook gallery if there are any pictures of the Kelp Goose they used to share the enclosure with the penguins, and that would show the land area as I never saw them near the water

The Peak District enclosure looks amazing, but as you say,you cannot tell from photos.I actually got a sneak peep of what the general Living Coasts Design looks like from outside the complex but I have no idea if what I saw was the penguin exhibit and there were no animals out.

I intend to visit Living Coasts,Chester and Wien(all likely but not guaranteed)when that is possible.

Penguins are notorious, along with otters, for sensing if medication has been placed in food and not eating it.Zoos such as Marwell and Chester have had to invest into more complicated medication due to this.

Where have you got this idea from? Penguins are one of the easiest to medicate. Zoos give their birds fish eater tablets on a daily basis and other medication in fish as the tablets slide in through the gill of the fish and the penguins are none the wiser. They eat their fish whole and don’t rip their food up or pick at it.

Keepers have reported at several zoos that certain penguins are aware of when a given food contains medication. It is not playing with food as they can tell rather easily,or at lest at particular zoos.

From your list above Edinburgh wins in 5 of your categories, London only 1! How does that make London the best?

Because he's spent so much time dismissing Edinburgh as a viable option that even now all his arguments have been countered (penguin parade, size, depth, welfare, breeding, need for vegetation) he cannot countenance voting for it :p

Edinburgh wins more categories but that is just one system.

Funny how that system worked for you as justification until it turned against you ;)

I’d love to know what reliable sources you have out of pure curiosity. Otherwise a fish is a fish, unless it is completely squashed up or obviously messed with they will eat it, like I said tablets are slid inside through the gills and the fish looks like a standard food item for them. I would not call them notoriously difficult as you have said.

Quite apart from the liberal scattering of weasel words in this quote, I find it fascinating that you specifically cited Marwell and Chester upthread - the implication being that this is where you were told this information - but now state you have never actually been to the latter collection :p

Probably the same "reliable" sources that told him that Peru is basically Antarctica ;) in other words, making stuff up as he goes along.

In fairness, the coast of (even Northern) Chile is a very hostile environment that can be compared to that of Antarctica because they are both bordering deserts (one hot, one cold) and both border extremely powerful oceans with strong undercurrents causing massive waves.

You could say the same about the western coastline of Morocco, of course :P still wouldn't make it the same thing as the Antarctic.

It is not the same as the Antarctic and I never said it was.I simply stated they had similar conditions.

Score update. After some excellent detailed arguments in favour of Edinburgh and London the poll currently has Edinburgh three votes ahead of London with Living Coast and Bristol a distant third. At the moment the superior size of Edinburgh's exhibit appears to have given it the edge.

It is is great to see so many passionate arguments and 196 comments within 36 hours of a thread opening may be some sort of record?
