am not to sure why the rhino's didn't get on, but the giraffe is Morris or know to the public rafters, he had an alergic reaction to worming tablets. He skin broke up and got really sore around his arm pits, hoofs, etc and about three weeks ago they found he couldn't get up and took the decision to put him down.

Some might say (Oasis, here we go again)! In Oz.

However, I think .. by UK standards David Gill has now mastered a damn fine zoo at South Lakes. Growing nicely and with interesting species make-up. He has even found space on the website to list some of the conservation projects the zoo helps finance!

As some one who has visitied the place at least once a year for the last 6 years,i wouldn`t say it was a damn fine zoo, differnt yes but fine no.the raised walk way that he put in to me has spoilt the zoo completly and boy does it move if you get a group of kids running on it.But he does have some strange ideas of species mix would you keep Brush-tailed Rock Wallabies with King Vulture and Andean Condor???????

I've seen yellow footed rock wallaby with sulawesi wrinkled hornbills at LA zoo.
Pygmy hippos and mandrills, and the big bear mixed exhibit also seem a bit different.

I just checked out the South Lakes website, and it looks like a great zoo! Where does he get all his money from, because it looks like he has lots to throw around?

I have not been there, so perhaps any comment is unfair. However, I have watched the developments at South Lakes and know others who do visit quite regularly. It seems to have developed very rapidly(too rapidly?) over the years without an awful lot of care going into the building work. Is it a 'jerry-built' zoo? I 've seen photos of some of the paddocks too which look very bare from overuse.

The website trumpets breeding successes and conservation projects in a way that implies-we're the best, other zoos are ....

The Hippo/Mandrill mixing is interesting isnt it, im suprised they took such a risk mixing these animals together, im suprised they're getting along.

In the photo on the website, the Pygmy Hippo is yawning(threat) at the Mandrill male. Maybe they don't really get along, but they have to coexist as they are in the same enclosure. Because they don't actually fight, it doesn't necessarily mean they are fully compatable. Or it could be one-sided, i.e. the Mandrills don't mind, but the hippos do etc. Or... they could be fully compatable!! How can one tell?

The Cheetahs at Chester will be the Asian Sub-species they will be going in the old Lechwe paddock, the walk through lemur enclosure is not going to happen now,the new bridge will go in near the lion enclosure it will go over to the back of the Twilight zone also linking up the dead end were the Cheetahs are going.Any hoofstock like the Bennets Gazelles or any of the others that have been mentioned over the last 12 to 18 months are now no go for the time been, their is hoofstock coming in will tell you what when i get the all clear to do so but it will be summer at the earliest. Finally the female Indian Rhino is due in the next 2 to 3 weeks.

are you sure the cheetahs are asian, there are no asian cheetahs in captivity, the last one died at an amusement park near tehran a couple of years ago, could they be the northern african sub-species. Would love to know what hoofstock chester have got planned, but i understand your situation, but thanks for the info.

Im glad the lemur walk through isnt happening Chester should stick to having primates in Islands. Cheetahs are my least favourite of the big cats so i'd rather see a leopard species turn up. But Asian Cheetahs is something else it does sound a little to good to be true though. Im hoping for something like Somali Wild Ass for the hoofstock species.

Thats what i was told but suspect they may be the same sub-species as the ones Whipsnade are or have got.
