Do you want some big news from Chester? Yeah, yeah, yeah .... :D

Asian elephant Thi Hi Way has given birth on 18 February 2008 to a healthy male calf. It was the longest pregnancy recorded for her. The birth has been well received by the entire group. :p

Really? I thought that none of the elephants were pregnant?

Fantastic news, if true, but something doesn't quite add up...

There isn't a large enough gap since she had Raman for her to have given birth to another calf? He was born in November 2006, which is less than 23 months ago :S

Could this have been Jangolie/Sithami or any of the other females and its been publicised under the wrong mothers name?

Please check the news section down. It is presented as if the calf was born yesterday.

But I am not so sure now that you mention this. :(

What is the use of news if it is bloody .....

It seems legitimate to me now, but I'll wait for news from the zoo...

If it is true, Chester will have a baby Giraffe, baby elephant and a baby rhino in the not too distant future!:)

This may also explain why, on my last visit, two elephants were fed seperately (I think one was Sheba, the other must've been the mother...) before the others were let in to have their food.

Sounds like it could be Jangoli as she has had two live births and the last one Tunga was born in 2004.

I was there on the day as well, now I'll have to go back again soon

It must be a mistake- for a start she has had more than two other babies, and Raman's date of birth is 12 Nov 2006, less than 15 months ago.

Thi Ha Way, an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) at Chester Zoo

Mind you it gives the date for the latest baby as 18 Apr 2008.

Before I was up in arms over the good news. Now I stand corrected. It should have rung a bell when it was written it was her 3rd (live) calf. I just checked the family tree and yes it is a BLOODY HOAX!!! And now you mention Raman's date of birth ... now that would be a record preg for an elephant ... just ..... a mere 17 months!!!!

I will never again take this Wirral Globe thingy seriously. Please let us go back to the time when news gathering was just that .........

Bloody reporters get your facts right! Or should it read hype your way to stardom! Shoot the ...............

This seems to be the same story which led me to believe that a baby male elephant had been born last year at Chester. I even posted the news just as jelle has. The last information I had in 2007 was that none of the elephants were pregnant.

Jelle broke the news...:o:o:o but it seems to be established now that Thi has NOT had a miracle birth after a less than 15 months pregnancy and that this (old?) newspaper article refers to 'Raman'.

I think you saw Sheba and her friend Birma together- I think they give Sheba specially cut up rations as she's lost most of her teeth now- also I was told that Birma is her 'new best friend'

Sheba has only one tooth left and is therefore fed seperately from the rest of the group as it takes longer for her to eat her fair share.

Okay so there has been no mircale birth but does anyone know if they have been succesful with getting Birma pregnant?
