Whatever happened to the Arabian gazelles? At one point there were 22 of them at Chester, more than all other zoos combined, and now there is none. Only Blackpool, London, and Overloon on ISIS with a total of 3.7 when this must be one of the rarest antelopes in the world?

All the Arabian gazelle at Chester were sent to Overloon a few years back, and there is now some suspicion over there purity.

Thanks Kiang. Overloon is listed as only having 3. It's a shame as they made a good exhibit with the scimitar horned oryx.

It was a long time ago, they used to share the paddock with the giraffes butthe oryx were moved out when one of the giraffes was close to giving birth. I would guess it was at least 10-15 years ago.

Only 1 Crocodile Monitor in the R of R.A and 1 in Tropical Realm.Dwarf Crocs have gone pool drained waiting for work to start on conversion for Phillipine Crocs,Rhinoceros Hornbills pair bonding so fingers crossed for chicks again,Illigers Macaw have moved to next door to the Greater Vasa Parrots,Village Weavers are on show in the old finch aviary next to the Otters, the new bridge now goes from by the Lions across the canal to the deadend by the Lemurs.

I knew about the Hornbills, and I've seen on ISIS about the monitors. What's happening with the Crocodile monitors and the red BoPs?

Do you know what he female died from?

Regarding the Persian Goitered Gazelles:

If they do eventually arrive, does anyone know where they will be kept? I guess that they would've been mixed with the Onagers and Camels...

I Think that is or was the idea, there isnt anywhere else for them unless they're placed with the Wild Horses or Pere Davd Deer.
Why were the Macaws moved up to the aviaries near the vassa parrots, i've never got a good look of them before so atleast they will be seen up there. Does anyone know what happened to the monitors. The village weavers are new to the collection arent they??

Yes, the village weavers are new. I've seen the Illeger's macaws, they were with the Hyacinth's. I cheated. I went behind the scenes. They are beautiful birds.

Any further news on the Chinese themed area over by the red panda and bongo paddock is this still going ahead and what species are planned, if any?

@ WrithedHornbill: You mentioned at the start of this thread that Chester has 1.0 Sumatran Tigers... Is that still the same..?

Yes, still looking for our female for Kepala. I haven't actually seen him yet. I always plan to, but someting else gets in the way. Last time it was Tejas, and the time before was the on show part of the parrot house.

Regarding the aviary next to the Vasa parrots; there were supposed to be a pair of Ecuadorian amazons going in there. I'm guessing that the zoo has just kept them in the big on show aviary.

Yeah, it's still the one male. The use of the exhbit is rotated between him and the two Bengal females.

This is a little bit off topic but Auckland Zoo's Sumatran Plans are coming to fruition and maybe in a year or two they may have one to ship accross, a quick history (this isn't exact but close):

About three years ago Auckland decided to get a Male Tiger to accompany (in an adjacent exhibit, which required building) 7 year old feamle Nisha...

After a year or so of fundraising the exhibit began to be built (it cost close to a million I believe) and the hunt for a Male began...

Another year or so later the zoo had finally found a male 1 year old (at the time) Oz from Tel Aviv Zoo (I'm quite sure)...

Anyway a week or so before Oz was due to come over Nisha died suddenly from an undiagnosed and inoperate (I think) organ cancer..! I couldn't believe it 9 for a Tiger..?

The decision was made to bring Molek a 6 year female up from Hamilton, however upon arrival she decided she didn't want to come out of her den, for 6 months..!

The last couple of months shes really settled in and they are building a retractable cage between the two exhibits and hope for a successful copulation over the next few months...

Quite a saga, hopefully with a happy ending...

Oz is an amazing animal, (he's my avatar), and at 2 he is already 149 kg, quite big I'm lead to believe for a Sumatran...

Is there ny particular reason why the Illigers Macaws were moved there, were they an aggresive species or were they moved to just to fill the avary up.

They weren't being seen by the public, their off show aviary wasn't brilliant, and when I saw them they weren't being mixed by either of the pairs of Hyacinths. I think that the new aviary may be better for them.

Have the young Vasa parrots moved to Twycross yet?
