Biggest / best bird collections

Hi all. I am a new member of this forum and a avid bird lover. I was wondering what is the general consensus on which are the best bird collections around there, there are worth visiting? I know Walsrode and Jurong are the two biggest ones, but was wondering about others out there. San Diego? Bronx? Dallas?

I think that bronx zoo has the largest bird collection. The bronx has world of birds, sea bird aviary, pheasentry, aquatic bird house and the birds of prey exhibits. Also there are many birds in jungleworld and some other birds in the giraffe house, madagascar, and congo.

Loro Parque, Tenerife.

:p

Thanks for the input guys:) I heard that Jurong went through a rough period but that they are once again getting back on track. Anyone knows what happened? As for bronx, how many birds / species do they have? I know Loro Parque and their psittacine collection is without a doubt amazing, you're right.

Same old, same old...with all due respect just look in the International Zoo Yearbook-hardly rocket science.I suspect however, that many internet folks no longer know of it.

As noted in the previous post by Chlidonias, Walsrode is well ahead in number of bird species.

I'm sure many zoochatter's have it, but I'm equally sure many don't..... unless they're willing to pay $$$. For people with access, the relevant article is here.

Jurong was at its prime in the early 90s, with a reported collection of 8,000 birds from 600 species. It was pulling in 1.5 million visitors a year.

There were some management departures in 2000 when it got merged under the same organization as the Zoo and Night Safari. Following that, global events hit hard, like bird flu and SARS epidemic. Both took a real toll on park finances and bird flu threatened the viability of the park.

The park now draws about 900,000 people annually and its bottomline is healthy. Collection is down to 5,000 birds from 380 species. A collection review was completed recently and changes should be evident in the coming years.

Thanks Zooish. That is on the line of the info I got. A friend of a friend (yes, I know how this sounds..) actually knows one of the staff and she mentioned the same thing. Apparently they have a new team on board (someone from europe?) and, like you said, I think we will be hearing more on Jurong in times to come.
Do they still have birds of paradise? I was told their collection was one of the most comprehensive amongst zoological institutions (do they still have Wilson's Bird of Paradise?).
Thanks,:)

Yes, they do. As of earlier this year, I saw Lesser, Red, King, Wilson's, Magnificent (i think - it could have been a Wilson's but the plumage looked more like Magnificent) and 12-wired BoPs. Except the 12-wired, the rest have not been breeding or can't (lone males).

Okay...point taken on the cost/availability of the Int.Zoo Yearbook. So here are some 2009 figures from volume 45 [the last one].Bird species...ZOO BERLIN 354,TIERPARK BERLIN 389,WALSRODE 627,PAIRI DAIZA 300,JURONG 460,SAN DIEGO 365,LORO PARQUE 291,PILSEN505[!]...hope that helps.Must admit i was at Pilsen 7 years ago and dont remember a HUGE collection of birds but im going again in september and i do know that they boast one of the largest species counts in general.

San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park have large bird collections, as well as San Antonio Zoo. Dallas and St. Louis have interesting bird collections and Dallas World Aquarium exhibits many Neotropic species not seen elsewhere.

Are you sure? I have been there and I would even doubt it is the 3rd biggest in Europe. How many species do they have at the moment.
