Biggest 'Pet' Hate

Hopefully the title explains it: What is your biggest pet hate/peeve?

For those who do not know what a pet hate/pet peeve is, it is 'a minor annoyance that a person identifies as particularly annoying to them, to a greater degree than it may be to others'

ya know, the only time I think baboons were annoying is when I read In the Shadow of Man by Jane Goodall.

The very idea of a pet baboon is IMHO irresponsible. There is no way it could ever be allowed to have the same complex social life in human society that it would have in baboon society, even if surgically mutilated in an attempt to fix this. It would not behave appropriately in human society, which could never replace a baboon troop. Rant over.

I totally agree with this.

But, if we go back far enough into the ZooChat Archives we could probably find some cavemen arguing about whether a wolf could be happy without the social life a pack provides...

Not sure about wolves but I remember a member who was actively attempting to buy a pair of Spotted Hyenas as indoor pets...

Human and canine societies are sufficiently similar for the wolf/dog transition to have worked. Many primates have been kept as pets over the centuries, but it's always been a single generation thing.

I like baboons because like us they live in a large group and are smart enough that they won't instantly attack you like the smaller cercopithecines (vervets/guenons/etc...). They are very smart and often give you several warnings before they choose to full on attack.

I don’t know about that . . . I much prefer to live in a very small group!

Almost this for me, too. My household is made up of just two people including myself, and I have an extremely small circle in general.

Dictionary.com defines pet (as a noun) as:
"1. any domesticated or tamed animal that is kept as a companion and cared for affectionately.
2. a person especially cherished or indulged; favorite: He was the teacher's pet.
3. a thing particularly cherished."

In this case the baboon I used to want would be classified as number 3.

A "thing" is defined as

1. an object that one need not, cannot, or does not wish to give a specific name to.
2. an inanimate material object as distinct from a living sentient being.

This thread is about a thing that is considered a pet; hate.
Hate is usually a very strong, negative emotion, but by making it a pet hate, we soften it. Baboons are not things.
