Bioparc Valencia Bioparc Valencia News

Notice:
Monday 4 to Tuesday May 5 the Madagascar area will be closed for upgrading, not being present in the same the lemurs that inhabit it.

So if anyone had thought about one of these two days to go to bioparc take into account, especially if you like the lemurs.

The red-flanked duikers are finally in sight, today I seen at least one.:)
I posted an image in the gallery

Today I see 2 Red river hogs cubs in bioparc;never seen before (they are about 4 months more or less).

More update information: a keeper confirmed to me the yellow back duiker arrival , and the possibility (but is not sure) for zebra duiker arrival too.
They have projected planting grass in equatorial Africa exhibits where haven´t (or lost it)
The African Spurred tortoise has moved to a new location ,front of the entrance of Kitum cave, when the cave, at the end? be open to the public in September.

Zebra Duiker *Eyes widen and jaw drops* If that happens expect me on the next plane to spain.

Did they keeper mention when the Yellow-backed Duiker(S?) would arrive at Valencia? or have they already? I saw the red-flanked duikers there a few days ago, not the best exhibit I have seen but hopefully they will get them breeding.

I dont see Zebra Duikers arriving in any European Zoo anytime soon, I believe that the Leipzig Zoo also is interested to get some Zebra Duikers. There is none in captivity outside of West Africa, and I believe there is hardly any kept in captivity there either. Though maybe with good contacts and if a number of zoos show interest in keeping this species we may see this species back in captivity within 10 years or so.

No mention about zebra duikers arrival dates, the keeper says "it´s a proposal only,we are waiting answers"

I don´t have any more information about this theme.

ISIS and zootierliste.de have recorded common hippos for biopark valencia. Does anyone know, if this information is correct? (I could not find any info about those animals on the parks website).

The common hippos are at the park, but are not displayed to the public because its exhibit is not finished (The Kitum cave).

The information is correct, hippos living in the old zoo in Valencia (a couple and their son) are in Bioparc, but are not visible for the public, they will be, when the "Kitum" cave is open (maybe the September 15, said a keeper) the hippos live inside.

@aim_foliksta and KEEPER: Thanks very much for your information.

What kind of animals will be exhibited in the kikum cave beside the hippos?
And the hippos won't be kept completely indoors, will they?

I think that hippos can disposal of a outdoor area, but not sure, they live with Nile crocodiles, a lot of coloured fishes, and in outdoor part of the cave, we can see an aviary ,but the species that have keep in this are unknown by the moment.

Does anyone here have the "key statistics" on the Valencia Bioparc?
That is: (a) Number of Species (b) Number of Specimens
(c) Size -- hectacres (d) Annual Attendance

Thanks!!

Sorry, there seems to be a difference in the size:

As Bioparcs General Director Koen Broewer wrote me, the size is 10 ha with 6 ha more to develop. So the total is 16 ha.

Also I think (but I don't know) that the number of species by 250 is not reached already. I guess it is a little more than 150 now.

@Keeper: Valencia has 4,000 specimens on only about 19 acres (8 hectares)? That sounds like one seriously overcrowded zoo...or maybe there are a lot of fish and reptile species? Even if there are about 16 hectares (40 acres) that is still an awful lot of animals crammed into an average amount of space.
