Bird Paradise Bird Paradise news 2024

2 questions
Golden-shouldered parrot, Bar-shouldered dove, Common bronzewing, Masked lapwing
1. Why were these Australian Outback birds and the red-tailed black cockatoos moved to Winged Sanctuary?
2. Are their cattle egrets B. ibis or B. coromandus? They're signed as ibis but the species were split some time ago

the cockatoos were moved there to occupy the former common green magpie cage. the magpies are at the former lesser BoP cage as the BoPs are to be released in Mysterious Papua

the other 4 australian birds have been there from the start

they have taken over the Southern Pied Hornbills at Winged Sanctuary

on a related note, a portion of WS is blocked from the philippine eagle to the abyssinian ground hornbill cages

Been hearing conflicting information for its reason, from Sambisig being stressed to Hornbill mating season

Anyone has a concrete answer regarding it though?

On the other hand, wonder what will happen to those Pied Hornbills

I would guess that Singapore Zoo and the Mandai Reserves will somehow fix them up. Singapore Zoo does have a collection and husbandry/management expertise in hornbill management and ex situ conservation breeding (and for some species active restoration programs to wild) ... It has become something of a tradition and to high standards ...., I suspect even the highest management sees this as one of its specials and high assets.

Not too sure if anyone updated here but here are some small changes regarding Winged Sanctuary.

1. Crowned hornbills have moved to Heart of Africa, with the Southern Oriental Pied Hornbill now in its former aviary.

2. Madagascar Partridges have been added to HOA too

3. Gru will be temporarily out of section from time to time due to a female wattled crane coming in

So from a recent video for International Vulture Awareness Day, it seems like Goncalves the king vulture is now a permanent part of the Predators on Wings show. He has made sporadic appearances in the show since last year

Found these fellows in Mysterious Papua (the fellows with red eyes), have they always been in the aviary? And if I'm not mistaken, these are Asian Koels?

Is there are particular reason why those 2 species don't get along?

Managed to ask the keeper regarding this, though the answer isn't really related.

He mentioned that the Blue-Winged Kookaburra MIGHT be a threat, but since she's solitary and mostly hunting for lizards things should be fine. I don't think they're trying to get her anymore

Currently the keepers are trying to capture the Yellow-Streaked Lorys, apparently those guys are extremely aggressive and would outright kill the Lesser Bird-of-Paradise

I'm always amazed (and curious) how they can know which species can be mixed together. I didn't know there's only 1 remaining kookaburras left in the aviary - perhaps that's explain why it's getting harder to spot it.

Maybe it could've been due to past experience from us or other Zoos and all of them coming together to share their experiences, or the BoPs being in the back of house meaning that the aggression could be seen. Either way agreed it's always impressive

Regarding the Kookaburra, there were 3 of them in total with a pair moving to Lory Loft, so they're probably easier to see there. But to be fair they're kinda like the Red-Billed Blue Magpie for me where it's usually difficult for me to find them, I've had a way easier time finding the Seychelles Magpie-Robin compared to both

Yes, especially given how many species inside the aviary and the possible permutations o_O...

Same here, never seen the kookaburras at lory loft. :(

The red-billed blue magpies always evade me too in both Lory Loft and Fragile Forest

Quite a few of their mixes haven't worked out well, even resulting in animal death, for instance the wattled crane Gru attacked and killed Zola the shoebill
