That was unexpectedThis is quite an unusual piece of news.
A pair of tanuki (Nyctereutes viverrinus) will be transferred from Higashiyama Zoo to Bird Paradise. The official announcement explicitly mentions "Bird Paradise" as the destination, so I’m sharing it here.

@Zooish , is Black Throated Laughingthrush held in Bird Paradise? Zootierliste lists them based on an Instagram.
@Zooish, may I ask about the Magellanic Steamerducks? Will they ever join the collection?
Sadly, I've got a feeling that that simply means no.I'm not sure. Haven't heard any news.

The Swamphens, Red-fronted Barbets, and Pileated Parrot have passed.
Seems like there has been an overall drop in species / numbers in the past few months. Talking to the keepers, seems that since the old director (now at Woodland Park Zoo) left there has been less focus on managing the bird collection. Many deaths, less breeding and last time I went there I could tell the numbers had dropped, and I struggled to see birds, even in the early part of the day in some areas. The keepers also tell me that since the director left all imports were ceased, except the ones that were already on-going. Interesting way to manage a park dedicated to a single group of animals.
What I did see, was rats in numbers that reminded me of the old Jurong bird park
Seems like Seattle got the better deal. I had the chance to talk to him once and it was obvious how passionate he was for the birds and how knowledgeable he was as well. Clearly the keepers still respect him very much, even after he is gone to the US. Hope to see bird paradise live up to what it was when it first opened.
