Bird Paradise Bird Paradise news 2025

The Swamphens, Red-fronted Barbets, and Pileated Parrot have passed.

Seems like there has been an overall drop in species / numbers in the past few months. Talking to the keepers, seems that since the old director (now at Woodland Park Zoo) left there has been less focus on managing the bird collection. Many deaths, less breeding and last time I went there I could tell the numbers had dropped, and I struggled to see birds, even in the early part of the day in some areas. The keepers also tell me that since the director left all imports were ceased, except the ones that were already on-going. Interesting way to manage a park dedicated to a single group of animals.
What I did see, was rats in numbers that reminded me of the old Jurong bird park :(

Seems like Seattle got the better deal. I had the chance to talk to him once and it was obvious how passionate he was for the birds and how knowledgeable he was as well. Clearly the keepers still respect him very much, even after he is gone to the US. Hope to see bird paradise live up to what it was when it first opened.

Dr Neves' departure was a shame. I'm not sure if the Vice President post has been filled yet. The new VP will probably change up the collection plan.

While imports and acquisitions of new birds has slowed considerably, this is probably the "normal" steady state going forward. The pace of imports post opening was not sustainable.

i don't think its accurate to say that there have been more deaths and less hatchings. The avian collection numbers have not fluctuated much. But the rodent infestation has indeed gotten worse.

A little update from Wings of Asia.

Mary our beloved Asian Black-Necked Stork is currently in the BoH area (Under the Hornbill Talk platform) as she is getting an upgraded paddock.

And completely random side note, there's currently only 3 Northern Bald Ibises in Winged Sanctuary. I additionally also found a singular one in Heart of Africa earlier.
