the open bill winter quarters is now complete just waiting for the birds all i know so far is that they are asain openbills and we are looking at having between 5 and 7 sometime soon hopfully
 
its curtus to be picky lol (its not my name but taken from python curtus i.e blood python)
and with the open bills not sure where they are coming from but as said before i will try to find out
 
the old tapir shed and hard standing and there will be a addittion outside area which was the old paradise crane pen next to it
and in other news we have heard that nesbit (blackbrooks old tapir) is now pregnant
 
i like the colourful duck the best lmao. urm its been a bit quite really jonathan enclousres are still being built (its seeming to take forever) and openbilled have not arrived yet.
 
The tapir left I think for that reason. I was also because they wanted her to breed and she wouldn't allow any males in her enclosure.
 
the tapir was moved on because the new owner wasnt happy with her enclouser it got very boggy in winter also after a unsuccesful attempt to introduce a male I put in plans to alter the enclouser to house 2 tapirs for a more controlled intorduction but the owner decided he would prefere her to go to a new home which she has been succesfully paired up and is now pregnant.
We are focusing on birds alot but hopfully we will also carry on building up a decent small mammal and reptile section aswell.

out of curiousity what would people like to see at blackbrook either mammal, reptile or bird wise?
 
Well here's my list, Could you pass it on to the owner, as I'd really like to see a lot of these species at Blackbrook:

Hornbills(any asian species really, and maybe the Black and yellow casqued hornbills from tropical africa)
Black necked stork
Jabiru
Shoebill
Milky stork
Painted stork
Storm's stork ( not likely to be able to get these unless from a direct import, American zoos have them, and they are kept mainly at the two San diego parks, but the population is very much dominated by males.)
Woolly necked stork
African openbill
Malayan Peacock pheasant
Bronze tailed peacock pheasant
Cabot's tragopan
Blyth's tragopan
Bulwer's pheasant
Hooded crane
Siberean white crane
Lots of Birds of Paradise
Spot billed pelican
A few years ago there was a grey winged trumpeter and a southern wattled jacana in the forest floor exhibit, what happened to them? could they be brought back?

Mammal wise:
More Tamarins and Marmosets.
Squirrel monkeys would attract a few people.

Reptiles:
Gaboon viper
Rhinoceros viper
Green mamba
Tortoises ( I love all tortoises and all Turtles and terripens too)

There are probably loads more, but I can't think of all of them now. I'd love it to get these species, but I still love the place now.
 
i'd like to see Jabiru Storks and Shoebills housed in a UK zoo and Blackbrook does seem the most appropiate.
 
Since the owner is interested in unusual species, how about takahe and kagu? I'd also like Siberian Cranes, and Whooping Cranes too.
 
i've been trying to persude on parrots aswell but he had a lot stolen from his other collection so is very hesitant in going down that path again
 
What is the other collection you mention? Didn't Blackbrook have some ungulates a while back, I seem to remember Sitatunga maybe at one point? Are there any plans to keep ungulates again?
 
the other collection was hillside bird oasis in cheshire sitatunga where kept about 5 years ago i remeber them when i first started there. as far as ungulates go i had arranged for defresse waterbuck, addax and nile lewche to come but at our zoo licence review it was suggested not to go down that path for some reason i was not made awear of. so i can not see blackbrook going down this path in the near future
 
in my opinion Blackbrook shoud really stick with having an excellent bird collection with the odd mammal here and there. Though maybe the odd latge mammal woudnt hurt either, maybe giving visitor numbers a boost, what are visitor numbers for Blackbrook like anyway.
