Blackbrook Zoo (Closed) Blackbrook in administration

I was at Blackbrook three weeks ago and there was one group of buyers/investors being shown around then. Btw I thought Blackbrook was fantastic, even though it's collection is not as good as I'm told it was, and the entrance charge of £4 is ridiculously low.

:eek:Oh that's a shame. My boyfriend loves that cassowary and is literally crying right now. He sees her as a pet of sorts.

The collection isn't as good as it was say 18 months ago,but then they could afford to keep alot more species then, and even taking into account that a few of the rarer species of Waterfowl have been moved to Hillside for the breeding season,I doubt that there is a better collection of waterfowl any where else in the UK!That and the fact they still have the only Black-necked Cranes and White-faced Herons in the UK they still have a few very nice bits.

Hate to be picky but do the WWT centres not come close...? :p

I know Blackbrook have a more diverse collection but surely Slimbridge leads the way in Waterfowl? Just my opinion of course but that is a specific collection of (mainly ;)) waterfowl! :)

Not any more they don't.

Blackbrook....

Only been to Blackbrook once, some eleven years ago, but they had a complete range of Canada Goose subspecies (this was before the species was 'split'), which I'm sure WWT haven't had for years.

Collectively they certainly do: the number of species at Slimbridge has been reduced compared to the number kept 40 years ago, but this is largely because the sea ducks and some other species that need very clean water are now kept at Arundel. Much more breeding is done off-show and the Slimbridge duckery rears some birds from the other centres and from other breeders too.

Blackbrook....

When I visited Axe Valley three weeks ago they were preparing a pond enclosure for what were supposed to be exciting new arrivals; this must be them. Which species of Flamingo is this?

Blackbrook should have Greater and Lesser Flamingos, unless one flock has moved. The greaters were in the walk-through aviary and the Lessers were in quarantine.

I believe that when they became 'Wildfowl and Wetlands' Slimbridge and the other centres moved away rather from Peter Scott's original enormous 'postage stamp' collection of waterfowl, which was all embracing and in its heyday quite unique. I haven't been for many years and need to revisit really.

I have been to Arundel though and was surprised at how many Sea Ducks were on display. Presumably they have the best selection of these now.

When I visited Slimbridge I was quite disappointed by the lack of sea ducks but they have a hell of a lot of other ducks to make up for it! (Many of which I'd never even heard of before that visit... ;))

Looking at the Axe Valley website, they have Greaters.
