What is happening with Blackbrook's Steamer ducks?

They have been part of the collection for quite a while, but they don't appear to be breeding...

They do have two species don't they?
 
we have had eggs of 2 pairs this year for the first time. not sure which species. and i havnt heard of anythin new coming in really still awaiting news for the riverhogs
 
mottled ducks are still there do you want to see if you can spot them and i will let you know where they are after or you want me to tell you now?
 
I like a challenge so I'll try and find them myself (better hit the reference books to refresh my memory!)
 
Does Blackbrook still keep the following, and where are they kept in the park:

Flying steamer duck
Maccoa duck
Faroe eider
Pacific eider
Mottled duck
Scoters (Black and white winged)

Any new species or news on the hogs?

I may be coming up on sunday, so will the germain's peacock pheasants, Great blue turaco and Lady Ross's Turaco be visible?

Any news on what species will be housed in the river aviary? It will be one of the largest of it's type in Europe I believe.

I had a great day today, despite the persistent wind and the fact that most of the waterfowl were in eclipse plumage.

The highlight of the day was the group of about ten chinese mergansers that were living with the Brown and Australian pelicans and Spectacled and American eiders.

I also saw the mottled, Maccoa and Hartlaub's duck. The Great blue and Lady ross's turaco were on show.

The great curassows have moved from the aviary next to the Siamese firebacks are now in with the black cranes! There is a pair of Grey winged trumpeter in their old aviary.

The Asiatic openbills have now moved into their outdoor accommodation where they are not very visible at all. They share this exhibit with Eurasian spoonbill, Green peafowl and Lesser white fronted goose.

It was a great day!

Some of the best ones are Boat billed heron, Indian Sarus Crane, Buff necked ibis, Chinese merganser, Pacific eider and White headed duck.
 
do you know where the Chinese mergansers came from? (don't say China!)
 
I think that there may be a private breeder in Europe. Berlin tierpark and Wuppertal also keep the species. Would be best to ask Bloodycurtus....
 
I wen to Blackbrook in 2004 (On writhedhornbill's birthday party) and I had a great day, although I was not too keen on birds at the time. Now I am quite fond of many bird species, especially raptors.
 
steameer duck

blackbrook has breed and currently rearing a steamer duck i am unsure of the species yet but think it is the Magellanic. i will post a pic when i find my phone cable again.
 
probly is the flying then i walk past the duckery every day but never pay any attention to the board. have the flying steamer ducks been breed in the uk before then?
 
As far as I know only the Falklands Flightless Steamer Duck (Tachyeres brachypterus) has bred in the UK. The first breeding was 1975 at Slimbridge. I saw a pair with 7 young at Martin Mere in 1987. So it seems likely that Blackbrook has achieved a British first.
 
That's great I hope there will be many more to follow but in which zoos I don't know.
 
I visited blackbrook at the weekend (where we got in free as everyone dosn't have to pay over december and january!!) and in the Water, Webs and wings house was a pair of purple crested turacos in with red billed blue pie and a pair of victoria crowned pigeons. Are these a permanent exhibit or are they just in their over the winter period?
