Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp News 2022

I visited Blijdorp today. The new viewing hut for the vulture aviary is finished. It looks really nice. Also heard that they will never breed polar bears again in the polar bear exhibit. I think this is a real pity, especially because they build it in 2008.
 
Rotterdam Zoo and the Balabac chevrotain :
This summer 2 female Balabac chevrotains were born at Rotterdam. Rotterdam Zoo plays a very important role in the European breeding program for this species. It's home to one of only 2 breeding males in Europe and has 3 potential breeding-females. With 6 animals Rotterdam holds almost 50 % of all Balabac chevrotains in captivity worldwide !

There aren't any Balabac Chevrotains in non-European zoos??

Fantastic news
 
-New in the Rotterdam Zoo: a few Pseudacanthicus leopardus pleco's, a few behind the scenes and a few in the tank of the dwarf caiman in the Oceanium. Behind the scenes there's now also a school of Xiphophorus meyeri, small fish that have gone extinct in the wild.
-Birth of a Vietnamese pond turtle
-Birth of seven gila monsters, the only to have hatched in all of Europe, North America and Asia in 2022. With a total population of 17 gila's we have the largest collection of all zoos.
-A Henkel's leaf-tailed gecko has hatched behind the scenes.
-Over the course of 2022 the last of the blue-and-yellow macaws, scarlet macaws and green-winged macaws left the zoo. They previously participated in the bird show. Only one military macaw remains after most of those left as well.
-Sumatran tiger Emas has left to Frankfurt
-The short-snouted seahorses the Rotterdam Zoo earlier took in after they beached during several storms, have been reintroduced to the Oosterschelde delta.
-Death of the (young) male greater kudu. The Zoo is currently contemplating what to do with this species, they keep getting into trouble with the giraffes.
-Temporarily no guinea pigs in the zoo after the death of the last individual (a domesticated one)
-One of this vicuña's that was born this year passed away unexpectedly.
-Departure of both the 1.1 tufted deer and the 0.1 red panda in the old enclosure. 0.2 red panda's from Ústí nad Labem are supposed to move in pretty soon
-Birth of a Sulawesi crested macaque

At the age of 16 Asiatic lion Churchilla ('Chica') has been put down. The zoo hasn't released a lot of info, but in their magazine they mention autopsy reveiled degraded vertebrae, as well as cysts in her reproductive tract, helping to explain her lack of cubs across her life. I also know from sources that she had skin issues. Of course it can't be ignored that she had been living in total isolation for 1,5 years now following the rift with Lalana (+cubs) and the death of Bente.
