Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp News

Hallo,
On 10th March I will be in Blijdorp, I would like ask you, if the elephant's house Taman Indah is still closed for the public, I really wish to see this house from inside...Thank you for reply

Taman Indah was open again the day after the they operated Irma, so enjoy!

Great news from Blijdorp:

- 3 komodo dragons have hatched, big surprise!! The keepers thought the two parents, siblings and born in 2004, were still too young when they mated in summer 2008. Nevertheless they searched for eggs when the female looked first fat and then suddenly thin, but couldn`t find any. Well, she had hidden them well and on March 10, the keepers found 2 baby dragons in their parent`s enclosure and rescued them. Another one followed one day later. There may be some more hidden eggs! This seems to be the very first natural incubation of komodo dragons in a zoo.

- elephant Bangka, born in Nov. 2000, is pregnant by Timber and due in August 2010

- a francois langur has been born, I think in February. I love these monkeys and they´re very endangered and rare in zoos.

Pictures of the hatchlings, commentary in Dutch though.

Tamani has given birth to this lovely one yesterday... :D
Her mother in Apenheul has also given birth two days ago to a little one...

Hi Gorilla Gust,

Great picture, especially given the (lack of) quality of the light in that enclosure. I saw that the official Blijdorp forum has borrowed your pictures as well.

To elaborate on the story. This baby was a big surprise, as no one knew for sure whether Tamani was even pregnant and with her youngest being only two ...

She spent the Friday outside, as the weather is very nice at the moment, and did as she normally did. It wasn't untill end of the afternoon that keepers noticed her moving about with nesting material. Just before closing time she gave birth (the visitors had to call the keepers :)). So, textbook delivery.

The sexe of the baby is still unknown, as Tamani helds her very close.

The elephant Sammy will move to Budapest according to the Zoo of Amersfoort, in the same press release where the announce to keep the bull Alexander for a few more years. According to the Columns of Hoedemaker, Alexander will stay for 5 years with the group of Amersfoort. Sammy his visit in Budapest is also for a few years, and it is not his endstop. He could come back afther this.

Will he come to Parc Paridiso afterwards? I thought they were going to make a whole herd with a breeding bull, so far all I know Claudy and Sandry are the only ones there.

I don`t think anyone knows when Alex will leave Amersfoort and to which zoo he will go afterwards. Dragon, you`re forgetting that a litle over a year ago it was planned to keep Alex only for a few months in Amersfoort and then moving Sammy back. Even these short-term plans have already changed serveral times!! So PLEASE don`t ask questions about what will happen in 5 years. If there is something you can learn from the Alex/Amersfoort/Sammy/Paradisio/Budapest/Sevilla story, then that NO ONE KNOWS at the moment where Alex will be in 5 or 10 years.

Indeed, a lot can happen in five years. For now I'm glad that Alexander will stay a few years longer in Amersfoort, he is a nice bull, and hopely he will have some (more) offspring in Amersfoort before leaving...

@Dragon(ele)nerd: I don't think Paradisio will wait for five years, so the studbook keeper will have to look for another bull.

I hope Hella and Zitta will like young bull Sammy! (not for mating: Hella = 42 & Zitta = 40)

It can be that also one of the Emmense Elephants will move with Sammy to Budapest (see emmen topic)

Thank you for the map Gorilla Gust.

I dont know much about Rotterdam zoo so sorry for my questions.:)

The area with Oceanium looks like it became a part of zoo may be 10 years ago. Is it true?

What are the plans with South America zone? Which enclosures already exist (lama, pudu enclosure, aviary) and are there any plans for future (far far future)?

The area with Oceanium is the new part, that's true.
The South America zone? The lama, pudu enclosure, aviary are already there now. :)
For the rest someone else will answer your questions i think... ;)

There was once a plan for some rocky area with bighornsheep, puma etc. An extention on the oceanium devoted to surinam wildlife (probably incl giant otters), also moose would be added near the bison. But that was all a long time ago, so it probably changed a 1000 times already ;)

Some recent news;
scarlet ibisses bred in the zoo for the first time;

According to some volunteers one of the hyenas is due to give birth any day now. The lioness is pregant as well. And there is a tiny chance the tigress is carying to.

New is a group of 6 or 7 swamp(?)wallibies. (W. bicolor)

The tukan chicks have grown quite a lot. And they are now in a sort of kindergarten. 8 of them together.

New male okapi Kitabu (stuttgart) is doing well. He shared enclosures with all other individuals by now. Even Camilla seems to accept him. Camilla is a bit of a difficult animal. She is imporant for the breeding program, but she never bred so far. the other male in blijdorp, Tom, spend quite a lot of time with her, but she is not very friendly with him. She chases him away etc. she doesn't scare of Kitabu (yet?). So maybe good news for the future.

kitabu on the left, camilla on the right. Kitabu is still rather small. He probably needs to grow a bit before he can mate with a succesfull result, but i already saw him try to mate with another female, Demba.

Does anyone know where the older ones of the francois langurs born in Blijdorp have been moved?

(I hope they have been moved, and not died!)
