Bonobos in Europe

So this baby was born on the same day as Wakati?

No, Busira gave birth on January 1st, 2022, while Wakati was born on New Year's Day 2021 to Nayembi. So they had a New Year's bonobo baby for the second year in a row. According to the clip this baby is probably also a female. Her name will start with the letter X when it is chosen.

I'm sorry for any potential unclarities, I should perhaps have spent a minute more making and included some more information in my previous post to prevent those.

The bonobo group at Planckendael now counts 21 individuals, one of the largest in Europe.
Well, I suppose this is now the largest in the world.
If Planckendael has done a great job with the enlargement of the indoor exhibit I regret there is only one outdoor and far too small in my opinion. I know @KevinB that you don't agree totally but come to see la Vallée des Singes next to me and you will understand why I think so ;) (8.000 + 3.000 m2 with plenty of trees and bush is better than 2.000 m2 with not so much foliage).

Someone at the Laafsekikkers posted that there is actually a German zoo with a troop of 22 bonobos, but I don't remember and can't look up right now which one.

I don't actually completely disagree with you on the outdoor exhibit. I don't think it is that bad in terms of size or foliage (although larger would not be bad), but I do think a second island would definitely have been appropriate.

Unfortunately visiting some French zoos is not going to happen for me anytime soon, if ever. There's the current situation, and I also am really bad at the French language.

@KevinB Must be Frankfurt or Stuttgart but these two places have the same problems of space.

Well, it's not easy but France can be visited without speaking French. Of course, some zoochatters friendly with France could help for tips, anyway when the covid situation will be better ;)

I have personally only seen two facilities with bonobos (Apenheul and Planckendael) so I cannot really compare. I am not familiar with the German facilities.

I actually do understand French to an extent, but I can't speak it myself beyond the basics.

But it seems that any French or German zoo road trips will not be happening anytime soon, given Covid. Definitely not this year, I've already given up hope for that, and to be honest next year already seems questionable.

Stuttgart has a similar large group of 10,12 and is already absolutely overcrowded with also females due to give birth this year.

Oh, duh. It went right over my head. Forgot it was 2022 :p

I have the Planckendael group noted as follows:
14 Females: Hortense; Banya; Binti; Djanoa; Busira; Kianga; Nayoki; Bina; Nila; Sanza; Balina; Unabii; Wakati; and the baby born 1 Jan 22 (are they going with the name 'Xolani' if its confirmed as female?)
8 Males: Vifijo; Zamba; Habari; Nayembi; Mokonzi; Kikongo; Moko; Vyombo
Total: 22
If there are only 21 can someone please let me know who it is that has gone and what happened to them? Thanks (Happy New Year, everyone!)

Nayembi is listed under the males here, but I believe I just recently read about Nayembi being the mother of a baby in 2021? So there must be a mistake somewhere here.

My apologies, Nayembi as the mother of Wakati should be in females listed. So, when Nayembi and Nila arrived from Frankfurt in August 2020 Nayoki went from Planckendael to Frankfurt?

Unfortunately female FIMI (*in Leipzig 2008, KUNO x YASA) died under birth in Stuttgart on february 9th. Also the baby did not survive.
