Bowmanville Zoo (Closed) Bowmanville Zoo

Personally I think some zoo owner is just literally treating the animal as a money making toys.. They just don't have love for the animal. They think more about their personal interests.

I wonder how many animal abuse are still kept under the dark? I Think that is one of the reason why some ppl prefer animal in their natural habitats (wild)

I don't like agreeing with PETA but something needs to be done. Now I don't think PETA's vision of a solution would be right but there really needs to be a massive change in Bowmanville and it should definitely start at the top. I sincerely hope other Canadian zoos are taking notice and reconsidering the relocation of their animals there and possibly recalling animals already there.

According to facebook, Michael Hackenberger, has stepped down while he defends himself in court.

Bowmanville has posted another statement about the charges against its owner on facebook. Maybe I've come to distrust the zoo far too much to read anything they write the correct way but I walked away from reading that statement disliking the zoo even more. I will let those of you who want to read it look it up yourselves and let you read what you want into whats being said. Maybe I'm too biased now.

The zoo has a new lion cub to exploit this summer. A white lion cub named Alex who is about a month old right now. Based on the fact that Elmvale Jungle Zoo has 3 female cubs who are the same age he has likely been split from the Elmvale litter.

Yeah in the least two years of litters I have only heard for two being placed and that's the two who just went to Granby.

More unneeded cubs is not the right thing to do. It's not like the zoo participates in the lion SSP and adds to the genetic diversity of captive bred lions.

Well, my brother called it. I personally, didn't expect it to go this far. I figured a lot of people would opt-out of going to the zoo, but I didn't think it would be so much that the zoo would end up closing.

Now they have to look for home for the animals, which will definitely take time.

Glad it is closing but worried about the welfare of the animals. The big zoos like Toronto, Calgary, Winnipeg ect will take back their stock or rehome them at other zoos. So that will ease some of the burden. It could also mean some interesting additions to those big zoos. Hopefully none of them will be sold off to collectors and all go to good homes at sanctuaries or reputable zoos.

What animals has Bowmanville got? And which are likely to return to the owning zoos in Canada?

I dont know the full list of animals but here is the zoos list...

Animals – Bowmanville Zoo

As to what zoos might take back things, I only know some of Toronto's things. They have had some of their reindeer which could repopulate Toronto's exhibit. They have at least one Toronto born lemur. They have in the past cared for the dromedary camels so they could offer to take them back since the exhibit is open.

Space dependent Toronto could add animals to their current groups of eland, watusi, olive baboons, lemurs, mouflon and yaks. It would be cool to see red kangaroos in Toronto. Nice to see emus return too (they might be Toronto's anyway).

Assiniboine is opening a gibbon exhibit and they could just accept Bowmanville's.

There is more trading I think with the smaller zoos like Elmvale, cherry brook, Magnetic Hill, Oaklawn ect.
