Zoo Bratislava Bratislava Zoo

The zoo built an extension pen (500 m2) next to their ugly concrete old bear pit (300 m2) and connected those two spaces. The zoo keeps only male brown bear Félix that was born 27 years ago in the same pit. It took him 2 months till he first entered the extension pen.

A creek flooded the lower part of the zoo including the brand-new children zoo, some aviaries and heated houses. Animals could be evacuated. The zoo remains closed for next few days at least.

The zoo will open again tommorow.

Mud, debree and fallen trees could be largery cleaned due to 200 volunteers who came to help out (over 1000 local people registered with the zoo and wanted to help).

It seems there are some damages to buildings that will need repairs, but the only part that stays closed for visitors is a petting yard in the children zoo.

The children zoo is open again.

The last stripped hyena - male Kiam - was sent to Bioparc Valencia. The hyena enclosure will be upgraded and should get new animals next spring, species unknown to me.

The pygmy hippo enclosure is being upgraded by incorporating green space behind it and building a new outside pool. Total area of outside enclosure will be 1070 m2.

EDIT: Geoffroy´s cats have a litter of 3 kittens (2.1) and already visible outside.

The zoo presents its new projects:
- new exhibit for wild boars (already finished)
- new exhibit for Eurasian lynx of 1020 m2 (under construction)
- lockers for visitors luggage (already installed)
- planetarium (in early planning stages)
- antelope yards extension (2025)
- new muntjack exhibit and new gelada exhibit (construction starts in 2025)

Bratislava zoo, as well as all other Slovak zoo, has been closed by state authority few days ago. Foot-and-mouth disease has been found at cattle farms in south Slovakia and Hungary and closing of zoos is one of preventive measures to protect animals in zoos. It´s not clear how long it will take before SK zoos re-open.

Czech zoos remain open, but state vet authority is negotiating measures with them. Most will probably close their petting yards with ungulates (domestic goats etc.). More drastic steps might come if that disease would move closer.

I wish the authorities would see sense and start full vaccination for zoo animals first and - if you will - the entire cattle industry... Period!

Bratilava zoo will reopen this week on 21st of May.

The zoo will also lease longterm over 1ha of its land area (undevelopend land right now) to create a wildlife rescue center. This center will have it´s own entrance and will be run by another governmental agency. It probably will be closed to public.

New Eurasian lynx enclosure is finished - 5 times bigger than previous one, with more enrichment. After also increasing the size of pygmy hippo and bear enclosures, I am glad to see Bratislava improving their animal welfare. Source: ZOO Bratislava | Bratislava

Group of Rufous-thighed falconets (Microhierax caerulescens) is now on show in one of the aviaries in "Bird valley" (Path in front of former DinoPark IIRC?)
