Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo 2013

Went to the zoo today. It was a good visit but it was really cold and windy and I started running out of time. I noticed some new things:
In World of Birds, there's new Long-Tailed Hornbills (also one in Congo Gorilla Forest), Tarictic Hornbills, Sulawesi Dwarf Hornbills, Elegant Crested Tinamou chicks, new Falcated Ducks (also in the Javan Langur exhibit in JungleWorld), new Green Peafowl, Bolivian Grey Titis and Golden Lion Tamarins were on exhibit with Montezuma Quails, and a new Chestnut-Breasted Malkoha among probable others.
In JungleWorld, there were new Falcated Ducks and Philippine Ducks in the Javan Langur exhibit, only one Matschie's Tree-Kangaroo was on exhibit, both Malayan Tapirs were on exhibit (one of which was spraying everywhere!), and there was a new Black-Breasted Leaf Turtle (didn't see them, though) and Giant Tree Frog exhibit along with some new inverts.
In the Mouse House, the Lesser Mouse Lemurs were on exhibit in the Giant Malagasy Jumping Rat exhibit (rats were missing) and Golden Lion-Headed Tamarins were on exhibit in the Red-Rumped Agouti exhibit.
In World of Reptiles, new Yellow-Headed Box Turtle, Madagascar Hog-Nosed Snake, mantilla, American Alligator, and Forsten's Tortoise babies were on exhibit.

Pics up soon and I have some species I need IDing.

Also in World of Reptiles, the last exhibit that used to be home to an American Alligator and an Alligator Snapping Turtle and is now home to Bornean River Turtles and Northern River Terrapins (I think). And in World of Birds, the Guam Kingfisher exhibit wasn't there. The amphibian exhibits were closed in the Zoo Center.

The long-tailed hornbills and Sulawesi hornbills have been in the World of Birds for quite a while, as have the Philippine ducks and falcated ducks in the Javan langur exhibit.

Since when does the Bronx Zoo have two Malayan tapirs? I always thought that that exhibit wasn't even big enough to hold one!

Well I haven't been to the zoo since November 2011 so I wouldn't know. Since the zoo had signs saying, "diagrams coming soon for-" for all of those species I figured they were new. Also, I figured they always had two. I guess they are trying to breed them right now.

Huh. Didn't know they had two tapirs. I wonder where they acquired the second from, and if they still have Daniella. Black-Breasted Leaf Turtles were there on my visit in November 2012 as were Giant Tree Frogs since October 2011. Golden-Headed Lion Tamarins have been on exhibit in the Mouse House for quite a while, ever since the Monkey House closed.
Other than that, thanks for updates.

For the record, I'm not 100% certain that the terrapins were Northern River Terrapins as the labeling just said "Giant River Terrapin" and where the scientific name should be it just read Batagur.

Thylo, did you happen to take any pictures of the tapirs? For some reason, I find it extremely hard to believe that two were on exhibit!

Of course! I just haven't posted it yet. I also managed to capture a picture of one of them, well, doing his/her business. They wouldn't stay still so I'm not sure if I got any non-blurry ones of both so I just might PM it to you. I'll post when I finish uploading the photos and I'll tell you whether I had any gallery worthy photos of the two tapirs.

Hey guys I just realized that it's going to take much longer to finish uploading these photos than I thought so just PM me if you want to see those tapir photos. Anaheim, I'll be sending you the pics in a moment.

Nice news about the Elephant shrews !
I was wondering which species of Elephant shrews are kept in Noth America because overhere in Europe they are quite rare and only 3 species are kept at the moment :
Short-eared E. S. Macroscelides proboscidens Most commonly kept and bred species
Red-brown E. S. kept at only 4 German zoos
Peters Rhychocyon Rhychocyon petersi only kept at Rorrerdam Zoo.
Has America more to offer then just these 3 ?

I just got an email from the WCS about renewal of membership and it says that buying a membership now will get you discount pricing into the Bronx Zoo's Dinosaur Safari, what's Dinosaur Safari? This is the first I've heard of it.

I thought the WCS would know better than to have robosaurs!
