Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo 2013

I'm sorry, that's incorrect.

What is, the World of Birds will be closed for maintenance on Mon July 22.

Well, technically, Team Tapir's sentence is correct. They said "World of Birds will close for maintainence on Mon July 22." The "will close" in that sentence can substitute "will be closed."

The only reason it could be considered incorrect is if it wasn't a direct quote of the zoo's website.

Am I right?

Oh! I just realized that my sentence was incomplete! Now things make more sense:rolleyes:

The sentence actually was "will close". And it's still closed, by the way.

Oh, Thylo. :D

So I visited the Bronx Zoo on August 3rd. I was able to get some video of the tiger cubs (it was the first time I'd seen any tigers this close - so I was excited), as well as the baby silvered leaf monkey, nyala fawns, and the baby sea lion. Yeah, lots of babies! I got lucky. :D

I didn't really take any close looks to see what's different, like I usually do, on this visit. I was just excited to be there for the first time in five months. I also have a question. I was expecting to see the Komodo dragon exhibit construction in progress upon entering the Zoo Center. All I saw was the "Amazing Amphibians" wall with the tanks missing. Where exactly were those pictures of the exhibits taken? Were they taken in areas not accessible to the guests?

- Behind the amphibian wall is an area equally sized to the other half of the house. This is where the exhibit is being built. I took my photos through a small crack in the wall which was about eye-level.

A female African Lion was born March 6th, and was raised by the staff of the Bronx Zoo's Zoological Health Program. She was named Amali, and was recently transferred to Seneca Park Zoo.

Yep, that is most certainly the structure in the n'yala exhibit. That, coupled with the bridge on the right, was a dead giveaway.

I just find these vintage photos so fascinating. Seeing how much the Bronx Zoo has changed over the years is really enthralling, and seeing that picture of the forest elephants playfighting next to the Zoo Center entrance just makes me realize on each visit to the zoo I take, I'm walking on the same paths that hundreds upon millions of people have been walking on for well over 65 years. For some reason I just find it so surreal.

I mean, I feel that black-and-white photographs almost make the places and times they depict seem so distant, like from another dimension or some place you'll never see again. With color photos, the places shown come to life again, and you get a better sense of what those people 65+ years ago were seeing and doing. It feels like you're there, whereas black-and-white photos almost seem to separate you even further. That's where photos feel like memories - when they're in black and white. Color photos bring you back to a place and time, a chance to relive a moment.

But that's just my take on it.

I also find it enthralling to see how little it has changed also. Which the same pathways, same old buildings, same sea lion pool (redesigned and altered over the years, yes, but the same), and even the nyala exhibit, which has changed very little over the years and held the same species almost for the entire time!

I completely agree!

According to the zoos website "As our Children's Zoo undergoes exciting changes, it will close on Sept. 3, reopening next summer." I smell a redo over the winter.

I kind of always liked the Children's Zoo. While it wasn't my favorite exhibit at the zoo by far, it was a neat little place and kids always seems to have lots of fun there and it certainly had a decent collection of species for the children's zoo. I just wish there were more identification signs!

The beetle Sagra buqueti has been added to JungleWorld.

On the monthly newsletter, it was talking about new porcupine baby on the front cover and it said, "The Children's Zoo, also home to spider monkeys, wallabies, prairie dogs, and many other amazing animals, is open...." Now I don't recall there being spider monkeys in the Children's Zoo, I thought they only has squirrel monkeys now. Is this a typo? Have they added spider monkeys since February? Or is this a accidental hint at what "exciting changes" are to come?
