Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo 2013

Great news from the Bronx, as it has been years since the zoo had Snow Leopard cubs, and wild-born Leo finally reproduced! Hoping to get to the zoo in September or October.

It's even better that Leo was the father since he's a wild born Snow Leopard and from Pakistan so he was very genetically important for the population!

From a WCS press release (http://www.wcs.org/press/press-releases/five-california-sea-lions.aspx):
"Lastly, a sea lion pup was born at the Bronx Zoo on June 28th. The pup is the third baby born to mother, Indy. This is the sixth offspring of father, Kiani, who was transferred to be the breeding bull at the New York Aquarium."
The newborn is female and is still unnamed. She joins Halftime, another rescue brought to the Bronx in 2012; Margaretta; McCabe; Nav; and Indy in the pool on the zoo’s historic Astor Court. California sea lions are exhibited at all five WCS facilities: the Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo and Queens Zoo."
I believe AnaheimZoo mentioned this individual earlier.

Boo at the Zoo starts this weekend. The end of the email says, "...and visit our newest exhibit at Zoo Center to meet living creatures straight out of myth and legend: Komodo Dragons!" so I'm guessing the new exhibit opens this weekend!:D

I don't remember if this was ever posted or not, but if not, Bronx has traded 10 Gharials for 4 Komodo Dragons with the Los Angeles Zoo.

So did the exhibit open?

does anybody know what other crazy things they have off site

Not really. I'd think one or two species from the Monkey House might be still kept off-show, and I know the zoo has many, many birds that go between being on and off-show. I know they have some rare reptiles like Golden Coin Turtle, Yellow-Headed Box Turtle, Forster's Tortoise, and some species of softshell turtle off-show. They also keep the majority of their Maleos off-show.

For anyone wondering, jusko88 has told me that he called the zoo and they said that they still do have the Maxwell's Duikers besides it seemingly as though no one has spotted them in several years. He said he didn't know the numbers they had but they are still in CGF despite having a sign in the Carter Giraffe Building also.

One of the zoo's gorillas, Holli, is highlighted in this article that explains how veterinary care works at the Bronx Zoo.

Some interesting bits of information pop up in this article:
The zoo has a total of 18 gorillas, and actually 3 troops, but only two are on display at a time.
A newborn Red Panda is being hand-raised.
A Fennec Fox gave birth to 5 cubs recently, and a few are being hand-raised since 5 was too much for the mother.

Just checked the website and it now appears as though the new exhibit "will not be open this season."

Why they are still calling Dinos & Dragons, I have no clue.

Seems 1.1 Western Red Panda cubs are now on display in Himalayan Highlands.
