Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2019

My apologies. I tried making a thread to diverge this sort of talk from the news before but it was deleted by mods who deemed it unnecessary.

Well I think the difference is before the conversation was just debating existing aspects of the zoo along with some slight speculation about the future based on announced plans, whereas now we're imagining future plans/exhibits that aren't based on anything other than one's personal fiction (not to sound harsh, but that is what this is).

.... In total you'd need at least 9 acres to build the kind of exhibit you want for them.

Of all of the top-notch elephant exhibits built in this country in the last 20 years, you'd be hard-pressed to find exhibits of 9 acres, even those designed for herds of up to 11, including males. And my last comments indicate that I would appreciate even a modest exhibit for a few non-breeding females.

Your persistent diatribes to me seem misplaced. Since I was only responding to the very interesting ideas of @Wyman and @Tigress115, I'm sure we would all be eager to see you direct such painstaking thought to the the particulars of their proposals.

I agree that you would be hard pressed to find an elephant complex that large, although Omaha, San Diego ZSP, Tampa, and Sedgwick all approach it. I'm sure Disney does as well. You were the one who asked for a 3 acre yard plus a larger barn and included visitor areas. For all of that, you're still going to be pushing 5-6+ acres even without additional yards (which would likely still be needed). My calculations were based off of your parameters which you insist are realistic despite what others have told you. If you want 3 acres for the entire complex, well you're not going to end up with something much different from what already exists, perhaps even a bit smaller once you factor in the visitor areas.

I fail to see how any of my posts to you have been bitter or abusive in any manner (assuming that's the definition you're using for 'diatribes'), but if they are the mods are free to edit or delete them. The topic of a new elephant exhibit has been the subject of discussion for quite some time now, with you leading it with the majority of the suggestions. I am not the only one who's commented trying to inform you on how said suggestions don't work in reality, yet you've continued to brush off these criticisms in order to further criticize to the zoo for not doing something similar to what you suggest. As such, I have continued to respond in a vain attempt to show you how these suggestions are unfortunately not possible. I would love it if they were, but they're just not. I believe I even said how I also once thought the Asian parking lot was a sufficient area for a new exhibit. I don't know why you're taking such offense to specifically my responses. I did not respond to @Wyman or @tigris115 fully simply because their posts are brand new additions to the thread as opposed to long running ideas as yours are. Additionally, I already did address them by suggesting that fantasy masterplans be posted on a separate thread since it's just for some imaginative fun. I'm not going to critique someone's fictional masterplan on this thread when I believe those conversations should be held on a separate thread. I also don't know if said critiques would be welcome considering they're just sharing their own fantasy versions of the zoo as opposed to claiming that what they're writing is possible and that the zoo absolutely should be doing these things, which is what you have been doing.

I am also not claiming to be an expert in zoo architecture or exhibit design. I'm not, and there are others on here who are. I'm simply taking my personal knowledge of the geography and organization of the zoo, as well as my admittedly limited knowledge on zoo exhibit design in general, and giving my takes on the various speculations made here. You are far from the only person I've responded to on this thread.

Something that I just thought of reading this: It’s kind of interesting that the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan has a diorama of Dholes attaching a Sambar in their Hall of Asian Mammals. (If that Hall still exists...it was doubling as a gift shop during my last visit years ago.)

"Hogle Zoo officials also weren’t able to supply a home for the kittens but were able to find them a home at the Bronx Zoo in New York City.

“They started reaching out to some other zoos that they have contact with, and the Bronx Zoo was the one that was able to take them and wanted them,” Jolley said. “We’re really, really grateful (Hogle Zoo) also put in so much effort to also find these kittens a home
.”"

Apparently the Bronx Zoo now has 3 cougar cubs off exhibit. I imagine these will go to Queens Zoo once they are older.

The Queens Zoo does currently have two older mountain lions, so having three youngsters running around their exhibit would be an attraction. It would also be great if the Bronx Zoo decided to keep them and build a display somewhere within the zoo maybe near the bison. However; if I were to make an educated decision they are going to be in Queens by Spring.

Honestly the zoo needs a lot of work. I'm waiting for the old primate house to become an insect house.

Without the old primate house, the zoo still has more species on exhibit that almost any other zoo in the country. Can you provide examples of what actually needs work at the zoo?

Honestly the zoo is fine as it is, there's just a lot of things that seem to be missing. I can't really describe it, honestly.
