Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2024

On June 7th, it was reported that the zoo transferred a (0.1) western lowland gorilla named Kumi to Zoo Knoxville in Tennessee in April.

Zoo Knoxville welcomes new gorilla, Kumi, from the Bronx Zoo
It seems like instead of getting a new breeding male they're transferring some of the breeding females to other zoos and I know the gorilla population in the U.S and especially the Bronx is very stable right now but hopefully sometime in the future we get a breeding male.

So, I noticed that the male Przewalski's horse, Otto, hasn't been on display with the rest of the herd in a while, especially since the new youngster was born?

Is there any reason for this? I assumed that, him being the likely father, the foal would be safe from his wrath

Hadn't been to the zoo in a while, and have an update on a few things:

-I was asked to provide feedback on signage for the new/reopening Nocturnal House! Some of the signs I was asked to preview were for owl monkeys, aye aye, and bats (not sure what subspecies)
-There is one Pere David's deer fawn that I can see on habitat
-The monorail now features a female Malayan tiger on rotation with Anikin the Amur tiger
-Polly and Artemis the Matschie's tree kangaroos are parents again! The baby is just now starting to stick its head out of the pouch. It appears Polly and Artemis rotate days on habitat
-Linus the red panda can now been seen in the Himalayan exhibit as the monorail one is now home to a female and two kits
-The cages behind the mouse house are now featuring Geoffrey's tamarins and golden-headed lion tamarins
-The bird housing on the back path behind Congo is coming along well and vegetation is being planted. It looks like they should be reopening soon
-A bit uninteresting, but the restrooms on the rhino path behind zoo center are open, and I had only previously seen them used for the holiday lights event. It's kind of a cool, old building, so that's fun!

Are you sure that aliens among us, the aforementioned and rarely reported on temporary addition to the Bronx zoo, is a subject of this education material that you were talk to about?

World of Darkness is coming back from the dead? Daang, that’s awesome news! I’m definitely gonna be excited to see what’s inside the Nocturnal House!

Wait, World of Darkness resurrection is happening? AND this is happening after my big NYC trip which involved 3 consecutive days at the zoo? I saw no activity around the structure during my visits.

You’re telling me! I’ve never visited World of Darkness because it was closed for almost 15 years in all my visits to the Zoo as someone who lives in New York..

Hi all,

The team members the other day did not say specifically the words “World of Darkness.” However, a few months ago at a special educational tour of Congo, the educator had said to me that the old building that was all nocturnal animals is looking to reopen. That’s all I know! I’m excited too at the idea of it!

Old building that's all nocturnal animals, sounds like World of Darkness to me! *if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and acts like a duck...*

Oh, and the two okapi in Congo are once again paired as they were last spring/early summer. I hope there will be a baby this time!

Are they out on exhibit together or only paired when behind the scenes?
