Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo news 2012

I hope they move the pygmy hippo and tapir out of Tropic World and put them in the unused yards. It would be nice for them to have natural substrate underneath their feet. Although in the colder months, I am not sure if the pachyderm building is better than being in Tropic World, but maybe they could just move them all there for the colder months.

The Tapirs and pygmy hippos have outdoor exhibits the one tapir rotates between the two exhibits. I think that the tapir and pygmy hippo in tropic world prefer to have more water areas and cooler weather.

Also maybe they are planning on getting more nile hippos since if the kept the old one she probally would not live longer than 7 years

Are you saying there's more water access in Tropic World than the outdoor exhibits by the pachyderm building?

This is kind of random but on the zoo's website it says Tropic World Africa was closed on may 18 till further notice and is still not open so does any one know the reason why.

Only the gorillas are off exhibit, and it's for the introduction of the new silverback.

Is this taking longer than expected? ( I do not know how long it takes for gorillas to be introduced) because it has nearly taken a month also I wonder if the old male staying with in visual contact with the main group is complicating things.

Which rhinos are presently at Brookfield?

Am I correct to assume that in the Pachyderm House there is jus rhino and hippo?

The following is from their Facebook page...

Regarding the hippos, the Chicago Zoological Society plans to concentrate its efforts towards the pygmy hippo—a species that is endangered in the wild. Currently Brookfield Zoo has two female pygmy hippos—one is on exhibit in Tropic World, but will eventually be moved to Pachyderm House where she will have access to an outdoor habitat. The other pygmy hippo resides in Pachyderm House. This particular species is a solitary animal. Future plans include bringing in a male pygmy hippo for breeding.

Also, please note that we are currently conducting long-term planning to bring back elephants to Brookfield Zoo. We love elephants (and all pachyderms) too!

I am guessing that the pygmy hippo is going into the old hippo exhibit or the other tapir exhibit. They should put cape clawless otters in Tropic World Africa now.

I read this on the zoo's facebook wall: "we are in the process of working out a transfer of bison with the Elgin Zoo but it is not completed yet. If all goes well, it will likely take place in the Fall." Also they got a new eagle a couple days ago.

Just a tiny update on the pachyderm building at zoo. The zoo is currently preparing the old hippopotamus exhibit for pygmy hippos. When pygmy hippos eventually call this exhibit home, I would think it would have to be one of the largest pygmy hippo exhibits?
