Buffalo Zoo Buffalo Zoo News 2013

This discussion is an interesting contrast to all of the "Best Marmot Exhibit In SouthEast Wyoming" threads that fill the USA zoo forum here. You can't have it both ways: criticize a zoo for not having the best exhibit of its kind anywhere and also insist they throw together something and just get the darn animal out.

Going back to my original post, I can see it looks like I am saying they should just start and hope for the best later. Perhaps, they should wait until the know they'll have enough, or at least for the polar bear exhibits alone. I do not want them to hurry the pace, cut corners and it ending up like another modern polar bear exhibit that went wrong. I guess I'm more that they do good detailing on the actual polar bear exhibits. As for the additional animals, I think the zoo could do without them and if that could cut costs, that would be great. Or I would be fine if they used the planned budget for just the polar bear exhibits to make sure they get them right. No matter how long it takes, I do hope that the zoo can accomplish this exhibit as I like their idea of housing orphan polar bears.

I heard from one of the zoo's docents that the tiger exhibit's pool has been worked on all week to deepen it when the polar bears rotate in that exhibit. Also, over $16,000 was raised for the polar bear exhibit from docent fundraising of bracelets. The amount still due has not been announced.

The cutting back of mock rock and recycling natural, old rock for the polar bear exhibit sounds good to me! I hope things work out for the zoo.

Polar cubs, Luna and Kali, will be off exhibit starting tomorrow. They will be moving them to their new temporary exhibit and expect at least a week for them to get used to their new holding area. I'm sure the sounds and smells of big cats will be something entirely new to them! When they finally go on exhibit, it's been said they will be there for the first part of the day, while the tigers will have access to it during the evenings and overnight.

Despite being skeptical of the pool in this exhibit, although it sounds it will be bigger than the one they have now, having an open air view of them will be pretty nice. Although there are two opportunities for them to come up to glass windows (side and back of exhibit) to interact with guests.

Here are some photos taken by snowleopard to show the exhibit:

I went yesterday and saw the new pool for the tigers and polar bears, it is about ten feet wider and about four to six feet deep now. It is kind of weird looking now, they did not dig into the ground instead they built on top of the old pool. Now it kind of looks like an above ground concrete swimming pool.

It is nice to see the new pool in the tiger/temporary polar bear exhibit. I wonder how deep it is?

* According to a sign by the polar bear cubs temporary exhibit, the new Arctic exhibit isn't slated to open until Summer 2016.

* The zoo is doing some maintenance on some exhibits during the slow season, such as the snow leopard exhibit, along with the polar bear cubs old exhibit.

* The zoo has a sunbittern chick.

ZooLex Exhibit

I found this website that talks in detail about Buffalo Zoo's rainforest exhibits. Animal information, exhibit details and dimensions, photos, etc. This page was created at the opening of the exhibit so some information may be inaccurate, such as the count of animals. But if you were ever wondered about this exhibit, it's a great website to check out.

Does anyone have a current list of animals for the rainforest building?
