BX OceaLife / BXSea - New Oceanarium in Bintaro

Woah, it's probably not fully grown but still impressive! Though if the tank was first made for a tiger salamander, it will outgrow the tank eventually. This is like the second or third Chinese giant salamander in Indonesia right?

Jagad Satwa and Gembira Loka Zoo has previously kept Chinese giant salamanders. Most CGSes here ends up in private keepers and probably sourced from Chinese farms.

Third, supposedly

A post on Google Maps revealed that the tiger salamander in BXSea has been phased out and replaced by a Chinese giant salamander, which is a better choice considering its rarity in Indonesian zoos and aquarias, and the tiger salamander is more adapted to terrestrial environments.

Not shown here, the false gharial exhibit is now a mixed reptile exhibit featuring a hodgepodge of juvenile false gharials, some Amboina sailfin dragons and Siebenrocki snake-necked turtles. One day all three of them will outsize their exhibit.
The reptile mix has been there atleast since August, which I had already reported. It's suprising it still lasted, though I prefer to see the mudskippers returns.

Just like @NATY said, the tank wouldn't really support the salamander long term, especially with the rocky background that further limit space. Getting it to grow large would take a very long time (If they didn't acquire another, larger individual), but I do like to see it in the now mixed reptile exhibit later on.

A YouTube video have confirmed that the former giant Pacific octopus tank is now housing several king crabs. With the octopus, as reported by @Fargusno, was put on quarantine due to stress involving the use of camera flash by guests.

This confirms that the octopus at SeaWorld Ancol and BXSea are two completely different individuals, which I believed was the fact.

As of now, the octopus has returned to the exhibit and the king crabs are phased out (AFAIK)

Who knew BXSea will be the first facility I visited in 2025. Anyway, this are all the important updates (05/01/2025):
  • An ribbon eel has been added to the anemone tank (aquarium 2 - BX Sea - ZooChat). This mix is questionable, as several smaller reef fishes and even an lagoon triggerfish (Also newly added) are present.
  • An prickly stick insect (Extatosoma tiaratum) has been added to the stick and leaf insect terrarium (annam walking stick (medauroidea extradentata) exhibit - BX Sea - ZooChat). This is likely the first time this species has been displayed in a Indonesian public facility.
  • An African tigerfish in the freshwater area is nowhere to be seen, most likely dead as it was physicaly in a bad shape after being half blind when I last saw it on July last year.
  • Several tinfoil barbs has been added to the.main freshwater tank with pirarucus, alligator gars, redtail catfish, and others. With this combination, the barbs most likely wouldn't live long there.
  • Several catostylus townsendi are seen in the jellyfish area, with the phyllorhiza punctata being taken off-display and their tank under maintenance.
  • The planned penguin exhibit appears to be fully closed off from public view, blocked by black cloths along with several Christmas ornaments and sign. Wether the plan to acquire the penguin are postponned into the future or fully cancelled is unknown.

  • Poor African Tigerfish, at least JAQS still had their Goliath Tigerfish which could've fit better in BXSea's King of River. AFAIK, it also came from JB Aquatics so there might be a chance of BXSea acquiring it in the future.
  • The Pricky Stick Insect is an interesting addition. Glad to see it in BXSea!
  • Oh, also the Piraiba is in the King of Rivers tank. I hope it'll reach its full size. But still, the albino Pangasiuses (Pangasi?) are still there :(
  • I hope the triggerfish won't destroy the anemones or hurt the other fishes, but the ribbon eel and the triggerfish would be better at the cylindrical tank with the Desjardin's sailfin tangs.
  • From what I know, in Audrey's video the BXSea peeps are trying to get African Penguins from another source instead of directly from South Africa as seen below (timestamp 1:05:55). Considering that African Penguins are critically endangered nowadays, it's pretty too ambitious for BXSea to acquire them at this point. I don't think zoos would give them easily, not even GL Zoo that kept a flock of them from Singapore Zoo.

A group of tinfoil barbs are already present in the king of river exhibit during my visit in November 2024. I didn't expect they're still present there until now. I hope they moved the tinfoil barbs to replace banded leoprinus and silver dollars in the mixed predatory aquarium that's currently housing florida gars.

I'm also wishing BXSea acquired goliath tigerfishes for their king of river exhibit. Maybe barramundis or giant gouramis would be a nice addition for BXSea's king of river exhibit. I hope BXSea reduced the amount of albino iridescent sharks, aligator gars, xingu river ray, and peacock basses in their king of river exhibit because it may be causing overpopulation if BX Sea acquired another fish for their king of river exhibit.

From my visit on monday (03/02/2025), in the ray pool, the pair of pateobatis jenkinsii has been replaced by an urogymnus granulatus and an himantura (Labelled as undulatus). The pateobatis pair has been moved to the main tank.

Anything else? Like phased out animals, or other updates on their animal collection?
Oh, and also their plans with the penguin exhibit that has been empty for a year

Obviously the penguins won't be coming soon it seems like. Aside from the rays, there's really no other major new addition or phasing out.

Ohh...
Well looks like BXSea could rescape the penguin exhibit into something else, so it won't become a waste of space. Them getting African penguins sounds unrealistic considering their current conservation status.

So rn I'm in BXSea, since I'm having my end of semester holiday until around March (may end earlier because my campus will welcome transfer students from Japan, though they won't be here for a long time as they have to get back to their home country next month).

Some updates from what I saw:
  • The sailfin dragon is off-display. There's a juvenile false gharial in the exhibit.
  • The pignose turtle has been moved to the King of the River tank. There's also a second Paroon Shark there, albeit smaller than the other one.
  • Some more eagle rays and leopard whiprays has been added to the tunnel tank from the quarantine.
  • The penguins are still in limbo, this time permit/legal-related limbo (this is what happens when you insist in getting a Critically Endangered fauna).
  • I asked a staff there and they're still planning to get a larger shark for the tunnel tank. Still on the Sand Tiger Shark copium, I guess. Sicklefin Lemon could work too, or probably Silvertip Shark. SEA Aquarium kept both of them, AFAIK.
Photos will be uploaded soon.

Large mangrove whipray, or porcupine ray?

This must be a mangrove whipray, since the ray has a white spot, not thorns.

I wish BXSea acquired more pig-nosed turtles for the king of river tank and reduced the amount of albino pangasius and aligator gars in the king of river tank because it may be causing the tank to crash if BXSea would add another fish in the tank. I'm actually wishing BXSea to acquire goliath tigerfishes and barramundis for the king of river tank, maybe the goliath tigerfishes at JAQ should be sent to BXSea's king of river.

That's great! I'm wishing BXSea to acquire sand tiger sharks so we don't need to go to Singapore (S.E.A. Aquarium) or Malaysia (Aquaria KLCC) to see them.

Thx for the ID help. Looks pretty new!

You're correct, they can be further identified by their white tail, aside from that white spots and darker body of course.

It is new, an single species was seen in the ray pool. It's likely that it was recently moved to the main tank, it was already quite big.
