Cairns Tropical Zoo (Closed) Cairns Tropical Zoo Downsizing

The days of expansive zoological gardens with disconnected infrastructure have passed.

What is 'disconnected infrastructure'?

that's how I read it as well. Basically, he seems to be saying that visitors don't have the time nor inclination to visit a large or even a medium-sized zoo, they want to get in and get out as fast as possible, and the way to give them that is to have a tiny site with just a handful of animals.

I wonder if they are reducing the entrance fee to go with the smaller size and collection.....

I guess lots of tourists, especially from overseas just want to see a couple of iconic animals and have their picture taken with a koala.

Many people visiting from Japan for example, are there for a very short time and list seeing a koala as a major reason for visiting Australia, despite there being plenty in Japanese zoos!

most tourists don't visit zoos when at home, so the likelihood is that few Japanese would even know they have koalas in Japan. It's just something that needs to be ticked off the list when in Australia. It's the same in NZ where everybody "has" to see a kiwi, even if they have literally no interest in animals otherwise. It isn't the animal they're interested in seeing, it is the icon that it represents (koala=Australia, kiwi=NZ).

I think it means a Sydney Aquarium style wildlife park...I figure disconnected infrastructure means exhibits and assets spread out across a wider area??

Reading the article, its not clear what species will not be retained at the new zoo, does anyone have any ideas? I don't even know what they do have.

I guess downsizing is preferable to closing, as has recently happened nearby, but their justification seems bizarre. Its not like its London Zoo in the early 90s.
