This is excellent news! Ever since the flood, the zoo's MASSIVE indoor free flight exhibit has been very sparse. However as of the past year or two they're finally starting to add more and more birds to it, helping it return to its former glory. I remember visiting several years ago and there was a good population of various waterfowl inhabiting the exhibit, when I last visited around 2 years ago There were perhaps four or five ducks total inhabiting the pools of the exhibit.
 
A new female river otter, Kate, has arrived from Brookfield and is being introduced to Finnegan and Charlotte.
 
The Devonian Wildlife Conservation Centre welcomed twin whooping cranes being raised by their grandparents. Apparently raising both chicks is rare but this couple is doing it.

Neil, a dall's sheep was put down Aug 2 due to a gastrointestinal infection that could not be cured despite every effort.

Two big horn sheep lambs were born to mom Cheyenne and Beth and dad Sue on June 4th and July 18th respectively. They will be dad Sue's last offspring as he had to be put down August 18th. He had outlived the average life expectancy by two years. During his life he sired 18 lambs.

Camel, Ollie, has rejoined the females and young son Gobi at the zoo. Father and son are getting along well.

A king penguin chick who hatched on Aug 15th did not survive. Mom and dad were trying to feed the chick but it had a yoke sack infection and didn't feed. Despite intervention it could not be saved.

Female mandrill, Layla, has arrived from Granby to keep her big brother Yusufu company.

A rescued woodland caribou, Kirby, has joined Tuktu, Vanilla & Lindsay.
 
Meet Maple: Calgary Zoo gives new moose calf a name

A rescued moose calf named Maple is now on display in the Canadian Wilds. Her exhibit is by Penguin Plunge and was once part of the Aspen Woodlands. It's been almost a decade since the Calgary Zoo last displayed moose.


The Calgary Zoo recently won the 2018 AZA Green Award for sustainability initiatives!
Sustainability has been an important part of recent developments. Panda Passage will receive Living Petal Certification. Land of Lemurs used sustainably harvested wood and the Enmax Conservatory uses renewable energy generated on site.
The Zoo has also reduced on-site waste destined for landfills by 70%. They have a three-stream bin system and encourage guests, volunteers, and staff to reduce waste.
 
One of the rhea chicks born this summer did not survive. The little one never gained weight despite best efforts of staff to help it do so.
 
Calgary recently welcomed 8 new Whooping Cranes to their breeding program from the Patuxent Wildlife Centre.
