The zoo released the necropsy report. Baffin died of a crushed trachea, from play with companion Siku. They do go on to make a point that it was not heat related and that they remain committed to animal well being and trying to keep polar bears together. Not just displaying one on its own.

In the comments of their instagram post. The zoo said” It is still very early, but we will look into finding him a suitable mate in the future. No timeline yet!”

On July 15th, the institute announced that 2+ burrowing owls were released into the wild in April.


On June 20th, the institute announced that 7 Vancouver Island marmots were born from 2 different litters. On August 7th, the institute announced that 10 more Vancouver Island marmots were born from 3 different litters.

On July 4th, the institute announced that a (0.1) whooping crane named Eve passed away at age 45 due to age-related heart disease.

On August 14th, the zoo announced they acquired a (1.0) red-crowned crane named Hiiro in spring which is now at the Wilder Institute. The zoo also announced they moved their (0.1) red-crowned crane Ruby to the institute.

This is a very unfortunate incident, ... however I don't think anything would have been able to prevent it. The zoo must be applauded for being so transparant and engaging the general public and the media.

Those thinking bad or malicious (intent) are always going to be fiercely critical ..., however these segments of society can never be swayed by anything.

On June 11 2024, 9 year old female Japanese serow, Yuki passed away. She was born at Calgary Zoo. Sad news, I was making my Japanese serow list, only to find out she passed.

Sadly, Japanese serow seem to be slowly disappearing from North American zoo collections.
 
On July 25th, the zoo announced that a Humboldt penguin hatched on June 26th.

On September 12th, the zoo announced the penguin's sex (1.0) and name, Felix.

I believe that Calgary Zoo sports 2 crane species ..., the red-crowned discussed here and whooping cranes (allthough be it in different zoogeographical areas ...., I guess).
