Groundbreaking event for new Cameron Park Zoo attractions | kcentv.com

The new additions to the zoo include an Education Center, Vet Hospital and the Penguin Shores Exhibit.

The Penguin Shores Exhibit will allow zookeepers to facilitate breeding for the endangered South African black-footed penguins.
No mention of the Black-Footed Cat habitat that was supposed to accompany the penguin habitat, I guess those plans were dropped.

The Black-footed cat habitat is mentioned here (August 2022): Waco: Zoo expansion project $10 million short

The zoo have found themselves $10 million short for these projects due to increased construction costs and other factors. Taking out the Black-footed cat and family restrooms would mean they’re around $7.8 million short.

Giraffe calf due June/July:

The young bull giraffe is leaving; but his parents are expecting again:

Cameron Park Zoo giraffe Zeke moving to Cincinnati | kcentv.com

While the Cameron Park staff said they will be sad to see Zeke go, his move will come just in time to welcome a new giraffe to the family. Zeke's mother and father, Penelope and Dane, are expecting a new calf that is expected to arrive in late June or early July.

0.1 Masai giraffe calf was born on June 23rd to second-time parents, Dane and Penelope. The zoo is holding a naming contest for the calf running from June 27th to July 9th with the name choices being Adelaide, Kalani, Kira, and Zuri.

Cameron Park Zoo on Instagram: "Cameron Park Zoo is excited to announce the birth of a female Masai giraffe who was born at the zoo on Friday, June 23 at 5:10 am. She is 6 ft. 7 inches tall and weighs 156 pounds. Her mom, Penelope, was born on May 9, 2013, and came to Cameron Park Zoo from the San Diego Zoo. Her dad, Dane, was born on April 18, 2013 and came from the Santa Barbara Zoo. The birth of this calf is important to her species as the Masai giraffes are currently endangered, and is the second calf born to this pair at Cameron Park Zoo. The Cameron Park Zoological & Botanical Society is holding a naming contest for this little lady beginning June 27, 2023 through July 9, 2023. Name choices are Adelaide (kind/noble), Kalani (royal/majesty), Kira (throne), and Zuri (beautiful). Each participant will pay $5 per vote to help choose a name. The funds raised from the contest will go to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The Masai giraffe is the largest species of giraffe and can be found in Central and Southern Kenya, as well as in Tanzania. They are known for their distinct and irregular star-like blotches that extend to their hooves. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the global authority on the conservation status of wild animals and plants, lists Masai giraffes as endangered, primarily due to poaching and habitat fragmentation. This new calf’s birth was based on a SSP (Species Survival Plan) breeding recommendation, which was given to help maintain a genetically diverse and self-sustaining population of a particular species under professional care. It is with great sadness that the Cameron Park Zoo announces the death of Penelope, the Zoo’s adult female Masai giraffe. Penelope became ill late last night, and the Zoo’s veterinarian and staff worked with her during the night, and unfortunately, she passed early this morning. Born May 9, 2013, Penelope was ten years old and came to Cameron Park Zoo from the San Diego Zoo. A necropsy (animal autopsy) has been performed to determine the exact cause of death. It will take several weeks to receive the results.

The Cameron Park Zoo staff and volunteers are deeply saddened by the loss of Penelope. The support of the community is greatly appreciated in this difficult time.
