Can the Vaquita porpoise be saved ?

Surge esperanza para supervivencia de vaquita marina en Golfo de California
2 vaquita calves have been sighted recently by the Sea Sheperd crew and internacional scientists . which have returned to San Felipe, it is now estimated that there May be o ver 10 vaquita in the Gulf of México. The mexican government has finally begun stronger protection for the vaquita perhaps because of internacional pressure. The new programa is called Operación Milagro and maybe this miracle is still posible.

I am not the most hopeful in this dreaded scenario, but I believe that at this point, only a truly miraculous turnaround will allow the vaquita to survive the 21st century, and avoid total extinction..
I very much hope such a miracle takes place.

If anything that is huge progress and good news.

It never ceases to amaze me how government and departments seem to act slow and at the last lap before going into full gear. I am truly happy that finally the Rubicon has been crossed by Profepa.

If strong protection continues in the next Mexican government, then the vaquita might actually survive. But, dear amigos, international pressure is really needed still. The Mexican government is very sensitive to outside environmental lobbying and the threat of strong regulation from different organizations outside of Mexico have been vital. Let us all continue to struggle to save the vaquita, while the still are some of these lovely animals in the Gulf of California.

Further efforts to protect the vaquita are being carried out.

So it. Seems that the current Mexican government is responding to international pressure to save the vaquita.

So in the last year or two, we have seen the population stabilise somewhat at around 10~ individuals (including new calves) after extremely rapid declines over the decade beforehand from just under 100 initially. And now there seems to be a lot more pressure on the governments to actually do something. The situation is still extremely bleak however I am honestly really surprised the vaquita has managed to cling on since 2020. I still think the population is way too low for me to be at all optimistic but I'd be lying if I said the events of the last few years aren't at least a little positively surprising.
