Canids

I saw the Tibetan fox in a few programmes about the Himalayas and I would also like to see some of the South American species, such as the small-eared dog.

These are the canid species I have seen:

Domestic Dog
Gray Wolf
Coyote
Dhole
African Painted Dog
Black-Backed Jackal
Bush Dog
Bat-Eared Fox
Fennec Fox
Red Fox
Arctic Fox
Gray Fox

Not really one to brag but I really appreciate how lucky I am to have bush dogs and raccoon dogs right here in Atlanta :D

Dholes are my favorite, though, and I've never even seen one despite them not being too rare in the US. African wild dogs are right behind them and I've only seen them from a distance on Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Seen
Grey wolf (Northwestern, occidentalis)
Red wolf
Coyote (captive and wild)
African wild dog
Maned wolf
Bush dog
Red fox (American, captive and wild)
Arctic fox
Raccoon dog (Mainland)

Which species (or subspecies) would you like to see more of/possibly less of?

The most wished for me would be a close tie between Tibetan Fox and Ethiopian Wolf. Runner-ups would include crab-eating fox, short-eared dog, red wolf and side-striped jackal. The "less of" canids would be any highly modified breed of domestic dog, overall small ones that bark a lot.

Having not much time to visit zoos, I've only seen Gray Wolves, Red Wolves, African Wild Dogs, Gray Foxes, Red Foxes, Coyotes, Fennecs, Bat Eared Foxes, and Dholes. The more generic stuff, to say the least.

Ha! Yes, you say 'generic' but there's two species there I've never seen and would very much like to! :D

Happy to report I've since seen all the remaining species on the 'generic' list... and few extra nice little doggies. :D

My 'most wanted' of the canids I've not seen is surely Tibetan Fox. Though I'd be very keen on a Side-striped Jackal...

I'm fairly sure I've not remembered all the foxes I've seen in zoos, but here's my list of "seen dogs".

Wild:
Raccoon Dog
Tibetan Fox
Red Fox
Tibetan Wolf
Dingo
Golden Jackal

Captive (including also most of the above):
Domestic Dog
Various wolves (Arctic, Indian, Grey, etc)
Black-backed Jackal
Corsac Fox
Arctic Fox
Fennec Fox
Bat-eared Fox
African Hunting Dog
Dhole
Maned Wolf

Oh, if we're going full 'lists game'...

Wild (in order of seeing):
Red Fox
Coyote
African Golden Wolf
Ethiopian Wolf
African Wild Dog
Black-backed Jackal

Captive (not in order of seeing, because too hard, and ignoring subspecies):
African Golden Wolf
Golden Jackal
Coyote
Grey Wolf (incl. Dingo, domestic dog)
Red Wolf
Black-backed Jackal
Maned Wolf
Dhole
African Wild Dog
Raccoon Dog
Bat-eared Fox
Bush Dog
Common Grey Fox
Corsac Fox
Arctic Fox
Kit Fox
Swift Fox
Red Fox
Fennec Fox

There are few things a zoochatter likes more than writing lists of things (s)he has seen.
I can think of two things which are a little better: showing photos of rare species that you have photographed and dropping annoying teasers in small print about species that you have seen but you don't think anyone else has* - which is much easier than working out a full list :p

A) I’m very much looking forward to the new guidebook Canids of the World being published in September. I believe it’s being in the style of Bovids of the World.

B) Species seen in the wild:
1. Red Fox (US, Canada, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Belgium, Netherlands, Korea, UK)
2. Coyote (United States)
3. Gray Fox (United States - Specifically Connecticut)
4. Raccoon Dog (Korea)
5. Grey Wolf (Alaska and B.C.)
6. Arctic Fox (United States - Alaska of course)
7. Swift Fox (United States - Specifically South Dakota)

I’m pretty certain a coyote like animal I saw in Kyrgyzstan was a Golden Jackal. My Russian-Kyrgyzstani colleague identified it as such...but it was too quick a glimpse at an unfamiliar animal for me.

I’m probably wrong about this, but I swear I saw a Red Wolf in rural central Alabama in the mid 1980’s. It was probably just a large coyote with a Red Wolf ancestor, but it was a pretty striking animal.

8* Pariah Dogs (Somalia, Egypt)

C) In captivity all of the above (except Golden Jackels) plus:
1) African Hunting Dog
2) Bush Dog
3) Corsac Fox
4) Bat-Eared Fox
5) Dingo / New Guinea Singing Dog
6) Fennec Fox
7) Maned Wolf
8) Black-backed Jackal
9) Dhole

Pretty sure I’ve seen Kit Foxes in a zoo...but I honestly can’t remember for sure.

So 17 total, with two more unconfirmed. 18 if we split up the Dingo/NGSD. 19 if the Pariah Dogs count. Canids in the Wolf/Coyote/Golden Jackel/Dingo/Dog group can be pretty fluid.

I had an e-mail off NHBS saying that this was available/in stock now. I've just ordered and I'm very looking forward to receiving it in due course.

Red wolves were only re-wilded in 1987 and that was in North Carolina. The last wild red wolves left before their extinction in the 70s were in Louisiana and eastern Texas, though, so coyote hybrids could have carried the genes farther east. Although eastern coyotes are all hybrids anyway to varying degrees, but mainly with lupus/lycaon I think.

I can't wait to get a hold of the Canids book! I've just recently gotten Bovids and I'm in love.

For this thread the reason is not to give a list of species seen, but to tell what canid species do you want more to see and what do you want less to see.

In that case. Dholes. And Tibetan Foxes. Maybe Culpeos. An exhibit of mid sized canids that kind of fill the coyote role in different ecosystems around the world would be neat.

Fingers crossed I will add my own "extra nice little doggie" if I'm able to pull off a very exciting trip later this year.

Couldn't agree more on your Tibetan fox & Side-striped Jackal sentiments!!

How does everyone like the canids book?

Realistically, I'd like to see dholes again as I barely remember seeing them at Toronto years ago. I also haven't seen bush dogs, raccoon dogs, dingos, or any jackal. I wish more places kept coyotes and maned wolves (I've seen quite a few maned wolf exhibits, not so many maned wolves themselves...)

I've seen Indian wolves in the wild but that was a very long time ago indeed. In the same area I heard jackals calling at night but never saw them. Also, in Darjeeling there were apparently dholes, but no sightings unfortunately.

Canid species I’ve seen in zoos:

Grey wolf:
  • Mexican wolf: Binder Park Zoo, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Albuquerque Biopark Zoo, Hogle Zoo
  • Arctic wolf: Toledo Zoo and Aquarium, Toronto Zoo
  • Grey wolf of ambiguous North American subspecies: Toledo Zoo and Aquarium (lived in current Arctic wolf habitat), Potter Park Zoo, Detroit Zoo)
African wild dog: Toledo Zoo and Aquarium (note: no longer maintained there), London Zoo, Bronx Zoo, Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Binder Park Zoo
Dingo: Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Toledo Zoo and Aquarium
Maned wolf: Toledo Zoo and Aquarium
Fennec fox: Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens
Bat-eared fox: Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens
Arctic fox: Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Detroit Zoo, Potter Park Zoo
Bush dog: Detroit Zoo

In the wild:

Coyote (heard call of)
