I saw the Tibetan fox in a few programmes about the Himalayas and I would also like to see some of the South American species, such as the small-eared dog.

Not really one to brag but I really appreciate how lucky I am to have bush dogs and raccoon dogs right here in Atlanta

Dholes are my favorite, though, and I've never even seen one despite them not being too rare in the US. African wild dogs are right behind them and I've only seen them from a distance on Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Which species (or subspecies) would you like to see more of/possibly less of?

The most wished for me would be a close tie between Tibetan Fox and Ethiopian Wolf. Runner-ups would include crab-eating fox, short-eared dog, red wolf and side-striped jackal. The "less of" canids would be any highly modified breed of domestic dog, overall small ones that bark a lot.

Having not much time to visit zoos, I've only seen Gray Wolves, Red Wolves, African Wild Dogs, Gray Foxes, Red Foxes, Coyotes, Fennecs, Bat Eared Foxes, and Dholes. The more generic stuff, to say the least.

Ha! Yes, you say 'generic' but there's two species there I've never seen and would very much like to!

Happy to report I've since seen all the remaining species on the 'generic' list... and few extra nice little doggies.

My 'most wanted' of the canids I've not seen is surely Tibetan Fox. Though I'd be very keen on a Side-striped Jackal...

I can think of two things which are a little better: showing photos of rare species that you have photographed and dropping annoying teasers in small print about species that you have seen but you don't think anyone else has* - which is much easier than working out a full list

A) I’m very much looking forward to the new guidebook Canids of the World being published in September. I believe it’s being in the style of Bovids of the World.

I’m pretty certain a coyote like animal I saw in Kyrgyzstan was a Golden Jackal. My Russian-Kyrgyzstani colleague identified it as such...but it was too quick a glimpse at an unfamiliar animal for me.

I’m probably wrong about this, but I swear I saw a Red Wolf in rural central Alabama in the mid 1980’s. It was probably just a large coyote with a Red Wolf ancestor, but it was a pretty striking animal.

So 17 total, with two more unconfirmed. 18 if we split up the Dingo/NGSD. 19 if the Pariah Dogs count. Canids in the Wolf/Coyote/Golden Jackel/Dingo/Dog group can be pretty fluid.

Red wolves were only re-wilded in 1987 and that was in North Carolina. The last wild red wolves left before their extinction in the 70s were in Louisiana and eastern Texas, though, so coyote hybrids could have carried the genes farther east. Although eastern coyotes are all hybrids anyway to varying degrees, but mainly with lupus/lycaon I think.

I can't wait to get a hold of the Canids book! I've just recently gotten Bovids and I'm in love.

How does everyone like the canids book?

Realistically, I'd like to see dholes again as I barely remember seeing them at Toronto years ago. I also haven't seen bush dogs, raccoon dogs, dingos, or any jackal. I wish more places kept coyotes and maned wolves (I've seen quite a few maned wolf exhibits, not so many maned wolves themselves...)

I've seen Indian wolves in the wild but that was a very long time ago indeed. In the same area I heard jackals calling at night but never saw them. Also, in Darjeeling there were apparently dholes, but no sightings unfortunately.
