Canids

Just those I’ve seen in the wild:

1. Red Fox (Germany, Belgium, UK, Kyrgyzstan, Korea, Alaska, Maine)

2. Grey Fox (Texas and Connecticut)

3. Swift Fox (South Dakota)

4. Arctic Fox (Alaska)

5. Coyote (Texas, Alabama*, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Oregon, Alaska)

6. Grey Wolf (Alaska and British Columbia)

7. Raccoon Dog (Korea)

8. Golden Jackal (Kyrgyzstan). Seriously.

*I remained convinced that the large Canid I saw crossing a road outside of Demopolis, Alabama at 0400 in the morning, in 1987, was substantially, if not fully, a Red Wolf.

I’ve seen

Gray wolfs
Mexican wolfs
Red wolfs
Maned wolfs
Coyotes
Dholes
Black-backed jackals
Bush dogs
African painted dog
Swift foxes
Gray foxes
Fenic foxes
Bat-eared foxes
Arctic foxes
Red foxes
Domestic dogs

Really? I've volunteered there for 3 years, and out of everything I found out, this is one thing that I never knew. I do know, however, they came from Italy. This was information from a carnivore keeper in a series they used to do on their YouTube channel called AskZooATL. She also went on to say they're the only zoo to house tanuki, although I think OKC Zoo had or still has raccoon dogs, which I guess aren't tanuki either.

Europe's Raccoon Dogs aren't Tanuki either.

I've only seen coyotes twice (one each time), grey foxes 2 or 3 times. The number of red foxes I've seen, though... and wolves...

Coyotes get significantly more common in zoos the further west you go from what I've encountered. Still, there are way more wolves in zoos than any other native canid.

There's a few dotted around, mostly unnoticed - and I think the place near Frankfurt that took Gentleshaws' animal still have it.

Yeah but that's one animal that originated from a confiscation(?)

But you're correct, there are Tanuki in Europe, but the vast, vast majority are descended from mainland Asian exports and these are the animals imported into the US.

Correct :)

Suspect there will be a good few hybrids in Europe - as I understand the matter, the last import or two into the private trade here before the ban were all Takuki, so people wanting to quickly breed a bunch before the ban hit will have quite possibly not taken all that much care in which animals they paired up :p

You are however correct that the import in question never went to the States.

So sad that before too long there will be no more Raccoon Dogs in western zoos :( Not unless the US randomly peaks in interest for them again which is doubtful.

Most of the east coast ones seem to be at roadside places/nature centers, too, vs more mainstream zoos having them further west. The two I've seen were at Virginia Living Museum, and Fort Worth.

Missed out on seeing side-striped jackals in Zambia/Ethiopia and as well as my first wild painted dogs in Zambia.

My side-striped jackal drought ended! In 2021 in Uganda I was able to see the species both wild and captive. Plus raccoon dog is now two species (which I've seen both). I've also added a handful of other species wild, which I also bolded.

It would be amazing if the Smithsonian National Zoo had Dholes or African Wild Dogs.

Might as well add a list of canids I've seen.

Coyote (wild and captive)
Gray fox (wild and captive)
Arctic fox
Fennec fox
Bat-eared fox
Red fox
Gray wolf
Red wolf
Raccoon dog
Bush dog
African wild dog
Dhole
New Guinea singing dog

Hopefully the list grows soon.
