Chester Zoo Cheetah Cubs

Even I remember the Cheetah days... albeit vaguely, considering I was about two years when they left if that...

The really old 'uns (or those with spectacular memories) will remember the cheetahs in the earlier home, now occupied by the cassowary. There was also a later period when they were in the enclosure that's currently home to the bush dogs.

Perhaps oddly, I remember them in the current cassowary area but not where the dogs are in the slightest.

I can't remember them in the cassowary area, but I do remember them in the main part of the bush dog enclosure - the rectangular section next to the ugly aviary (which I am still hoping to see demolished) held arctic foxes.

Polar bears were kept at Chester in about half of what is currently the Europe on the Edge aviary (the other half was waterfowl). The polar bears were kept until something like 1992/1993?

1992; the brown bears (which were kept where Condor Cliffs is now) went the same year.

There are some shots of the Polar Bear exhibit in the gallery:

When it was built it would probably have been the best in the country.

The polar bear encolsure can be seen on this 1950s photo.

We're drifting ever further from the topic but that's a fantastic photo - thanks for calling our attention to it.

The Cattle House (Zebra/Cattle/Cattle and Antelope House!) paddocks as the far limit of the zoo is an odd sight.

What else is still there? The waterfall on the sea lion (now Giant Otter) pool, Lemur Island, the Polar Bear exhibit walls incorporated into EotE, the Oakfield and stables (of course)... and what appears to be the footprint of the Aquarium, presumably only just started.

Thanks bongorob.that date fits the date i was thinking about.
Subject now closed.

Think I was one of the gentlemen with a zoom lens ! :)
When I went back today they were getting more adventurous and followed mum and explored the very large enclosure that they have :)

A few of us knew about the birth's but were asked to keep quite by the zoo, which we did until the zoo broke the news themselves!!

Staff a the zoo are fairly confident that they have a least one male and one female cub, but they're being sexed officially this coming Tuesday. The One Show are also filming that day and all being well the segment will be aired on Wednesday.

An appeal:

If you're a regular zoo visitor, please don't hog the windows in the cheetah yurt and let those people who might be paying their one and only visit take a look at the cubs.

On Saturday when the zoo was particularly busy, a large number of people gathered in the yurt when KT and the cubs moved in front of the windows. It was disappointing to then see a number of regulars - the type of people who post endless photographs on Facebook - camp out in the front and not allow anyone else a turn.

Of note was a large, rather manly middle-aged woman in a blue jumper who decided to sit on the floor right across the middle window and rudely refused to move despite being politely asked (twice) to allow room for other visitors by zoo staff.

They ought have thrown her out of the zoo.
