and great news on the Parrots too - bizzare that news from Chester ends up in a local scottish paper and not the local one? Oh the vaguries of the fickle press!
 
Very sad to see on Facebook that Kirana's cub was found dead today.

It is with great sadness that we have to tell you of the death of our 11-day-old tiger cub.
The cub, who was born to Kirana on Saturday June 18, was found in its enclosure this morning. A post-mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death.
Kirana was a first-time mum and her behaviour with the cub over the last few days gives us great hope for the future.
We are sure you will join us in offering our sympathies to the carnivore team at this time.

Very sad news indeed :( and reading between the lines of one of the comments on Facebook, there have been failed Red Panda births lately too - not a good time for the carnivore team all round :(

I wouldn't be surprised if the recent heatwave turned out to be a factor, to be honest.
 
Allthough sad and a bad day for the Carnivore team, it is not uncommon to lose first litter in primiparous females. Better luck next time.

To put a positive to a negative: why cannot more folks celebrate the first Philippine cockatoo chicks at Chester? In terms of rarity there is not much between these parrotine birds from the Philippines to Sumatran tigers in the wilds of Sumatera, Indonesia.
 
I would say the cockatoo breeding is far more important, they are very difficult to breed and I have been following the breeding attempts of the cockatoos in the last year or two with interest.
The first breakthrough was a successful pairing, then infertile eggs, then fertile eggs and now chicks. The hard work has paid off.
 
Must admit the cockatoo news is very exciting and indeed a big thing. And looking at breeding results we need young phillipine cockatoos a lot harder then young tigers.
 
I witnessed the first vicugna birth of the week yesterday. I'll upload some pictures if technology allows...
 
Was at the zoo on Friday, and saw both Giant Anteaters out in the enclosure. One was curled up fast asleep in the front left corner, but the other was wandering about. Have taken some photos, and will upload when I can.
Another piece of sad news from Chester is that the male Writhed Hornbill has died. The keeper I spoke to said there hadn't been a post mortem yet, so cause of death unknown.
