Which aviary is the one you saw in - is it the second one (including the corner one) after going up the ramp? Also the ones in the corner aviary was nesting (not sure if it has got eggs or not - just on a nest!)....If I'm thinking of the correct species :rolleyes:

It is the small aviary in between the corner aviary and the rhinoceros hornbills, at the top of the ramp.

Few quick snippets from a visit today, saw both of the White-crested Touraco's in the upper aviary of the Tropical Realm.
Also a Congo Buffalo has been born recently, looked to be a male calf but I could be wrong!
The work on the new Giant Anteater enclosure is progressing,as and when the staff have time to work on it,the fencing is now in place all round the enclosure, they need to remove the metal railings on the wall and put a smaller wooden barrier on top of it,and then all thats required to be done is to pull down the old wooden shelter and landscape the exhibit a bit!!

Scroll right down to the bottom to see Chester's baby Fen raft Spiders

These are also mentioned on Chester Zoo's facebook page - the comments really are something else, with many asking 'why would you want to reintroduce spiders, they're horrible and there are enough spiders already in Britain' - with a touch of people adding 'I just squish them if they come near me!' - way to congratulate Chester on this good news

how are visitors having trouble with the map?:), maybe next year i will FINALLY get to visit chester;)

I actually once went to Redgrave and Lopham fens (on the Norfolk/Suffolk border) to look for Dolomedes. I didn't see any, but I'd love to see one in the wild one day - so this is good news. I do remember wonderful views of 2 big pike in a dyke and a snipe drumming just over my head.

I made the same visit(to Lopham) and like you, I failed to see a single Raft Spider. I remember there was a nice group of Polish 'Tarpan' Horses grazing the Fen though.

A quick update after todays visit:
  • 4 cheetah cubs (or leopard cubs as a parent told their child!!!!!) very active early morning (well as early as you can get to see them) near the yurt. Also told that the other female has been mated several times and is now off show.
  • 5 Bush dog pups (or bears as another parent described them!!!) also very active.
  • 2 young Meerkats and 2 dwarf Mongooses but there maybe more.
  • V.T. Hornbill feeding young in the nest in IiD.
  • A Female fairy bluebird is now in with the male in the tropical realm, possibly the one from RotRA? Also a sun bittern in the same aviary in TR.
  • Other young in the tropical realm included violet turaco, more roul roul, asian glossy starling, V.T. Hornbills and red-whiskered bulbuls (I know some fledged a while ago but couldnt remember what had already been mentioned)
  • Another clutch of 4? shamas have fledged in RotRA
  • 2 Congo Buffalo now outside.
  • 2 young white-faced Scops?? Look alot bigger than adults?
  • Aviary next to them labled as empty contains a pair of ural owls.
  • Anyone know what the plans are for the wetlands aviary? Most of the birds seem to have gone over the last few months.
  • Also, Heather noticed a poster about the family fun run and we are thinking of doing it. Is anyone else going to be taking part? We could have a "zoochatters" team..?

A lot of surplus birds were moved to Slimbridge in January (I think). The aim is to exhibit African birds, hence the arrival of Cape teal, red-billed pintail, white-backed duck and blue-winged goose. The zoo are hoping to keep a huge flock of white-faced whistling ducks in the aviary.

Nice to here there's a sun bittern at Chester again.

That's Run for the Wild, you'll find the details on the zoo's website. From ZooChat, Mariebee and I took part last year and raised a few hundred pounds. It was good fun and provided you finish within he alotted time, you don't actually have to run. I don't think you can enter as a team though.
