I remember HRH was on the front cover of the Chester Zoo news, in the Tropical house with Mottie(George Mottershead). Was he opening the tropical house then? Or has he been since?

The Duke of Edinburgh opened the Lecture Hall on 24th April 1972. He has not been since.

I can understand that as you'll get to be there, I remember the excitement when Prince Andrew opened Monkey Islands.

Unfortunately times (and management) change, and the more I hear about this visit the more the whole thing concerns me, not least in terms of the huge amount of money it's costing.

Look on the bright side, they may plant a few flowers..:)

They have!

All those new fenced-off areas along the main car park driveway have apparently been sown with wild flowers, as has the lawn in front of the Monkey Islands station. The main entrance is currently completely flower-free though and the newly-sown areas probably won't flower in time.

Then there's the question over whether they'll actually be looked after once HRH has gone home...

No doubt they'll throw up a few hanging baskets... and hopefully the orang windows will get a polish..:D

I waved a very wet paper union jack at her in 1957 and glimpsed her glove waving back.

A few years earlier I stood in a crowd at Windsor and viewed her passing coach through some sort of box-like contraption designed to give small children a better view over the taller folk. Not sure if I saw her or not.;)

...but hopefully not by Subis :)

I love the irony of closing the zoo to open it.

I expect that Her Maj would be too well-mannered to tell Subis off, but wouldn't it be wonderful if she said "This bald gentleman has told me that this is your Realm, but actually . . . it's mine!" :D

I'm really looking forward to it personally - and purely speculation but also granting Royal Patronage in her Diamond Jubilee year would be very fitting - the "Royal North of England Zoological Society" has a nice ring to it!!

Now that does have a ring to it and may i say long overdue, could it possibly happen though?

So how much is it costing?

We could have had gorillas at that price!

Agreed, i think i said this before re:marwell's planned new entrance, people go to the zoo to see animals, not admire the entrance! Apart from Bristol & Edinburgh i cant think of anywhere that people would see the entrance before they'd decided to go in anyway! I dont mind walking through wooden kiosks if it means there is a new exhibit inside.if not gorillas, there are plenty of other species Chester lack & could have added with that money!

I can sort of understand why the zoo would want a smart new entrance but I was perfectly happy with the old one :)
I don't think its right that the cost of of the visit is coming from zoo funds if that is indeed the case

I guess cheaters reasoning with the new entrance is that it will pay for its self in the long run, will people just popping down to use the shop or cafe bit.

Also having the queen is great publicity, it will be seen all over the country.

On another note I'd love to see the zoo do late evenings, even just once a week to start with in the summer, get people down who work, have a meal in the restaurant and have a stroll round the zoo, till say around 9, it's light till then anyway.

Unfortunatly it does cost to have visits like this what with security and many other things that come with a royal visit and why shouldn't the zoo have to pay for the visit do you want the tax payer (non zoo visitors) to pay for Chester Zoo to have this great chance to advertise around the UK & World for nothing.

As for the entrance well all I will say is Realm of the Red Ape could have been a better use, mind you I don't see the Chester Zoo supporters having a go about a new entrance costing so much when an Exhibit inside the zoo needs doing up like they did about Twycross doing the same thing.

Thought Not

EDIT - I still love Chester Zoo but am getting fed up with some people Slagging other zoos off but when Chester does the same thing they say Nothing
