BAD
Bemused, baffled and bewildered by the new entrance arrangements! Feel sorry for the ticket checking staff left standing in the open, whatever the conditions! Is allowing free public access to the Elephant House sensible in view of the behaviour of some members of the public?
Very disappointed by the shop. Where have the books gone? From 80% tat : 20% decent stuff we seem to have moved to 95% : 5%.

GOOD
Nice to see the cheetah and tiger youngsters progressing; meerkats not my favourite species but the tinies are indubitably cute; saw both bears; saw 8 rhinos!; our unicornis seem not so much compatible as inseparable!!; delightred to see a young Oryx - when did that arrive? Dinosaurs are fun, and educative.

QUESTION
Do we still have two okapi?

Re: Rhinos

I believe in the on-show Tsavo they have now put some new ID boards up regarding which Rhinos are who;

Left hand side area; Bashira and Asani
Right; Kitani

So Pootle you were right a female was on-show don't know if she's pregnant however.

Also I'm not going to start the guessing who's who again because I know if I do say that they'll just change it around again.:p

Visited Tuesday, interesting to read recent comments, here's my twopenneth for what it's worth!!

Re: entrance - I like what has been done, the sculptures are a nice touch ( how much of the £2m did they use though?!) and the themeing works for me. The shop is great - like the concept and clearly designed to fleece parents of as much ££ as possible as can't imagine a single child not begging for a cuddly toy or plastic dinosaur - if it increases the Zoo's coffers then it's surely a good thing. However, I too noticed no books!! I can only assume they never sold any otherwise they would have kept them - you dont get rid of popular stock.

I really like the new Zoo font - now that more signs are being done in the new branding it is all coming together to create a consistent and coherent message. The Zoo over all is really beginning to feel very polished, tidy and slick - whilst not losing any of it's charm - I think the new Marketing Director ( is that her title?) is making a real difference. On another note most the planting is amazing right now - big congrats to the horticultre team.

I can see why the Rhino signs have been removed now - Tsavo Aviary/Rhino/Dogs etc all now have the 'research station' theme with all the same branding i.e. sketches of the animals. This works really well and I 'm happy they have made this area really cohesive with the planting etc - now one of my favourite parts of the zoo. Highlights in Tsavo were the live bird feed in Tsavo Aviary - didn't know the Zoo did this (only 2 or 3 days a week I think) it was amazing to see the Roller/Hornbill/Weavers swooping in to catch the live crickets being thrown for them to catch!! Also loved seeing a very contented Rhino clearly in his element rolling and splashing in the mud bath - a joy to watch! This are of the Zoo still does not get many visitors at all though!! I was talking to a presenter who told me a considerable amount of guests never even see the dogs! I think the Zoo could make more of the Tsavo zone - it should have a much bigger and better entrance with better signposting.

Other highlights included seeing so many of the animals being so active , enjoying their surroundings and being so engaging! Both bears really using the full expanse of what is the most amazing enclosure - Franka even climbing up trees - never seen her do that before. Otters are insperable lolling and relaxing in the sun. Both Okapis out and browsing their fully planted enclosure - she's looking bigger and bigger so fingers crossed for an Autumn birth?! Jaguars also more active than I have ever seen them. Couldn't see any ants - are there any there? And looks like the Agouti will be unlikely to move in with the Sloths as there a fears they are too timid and will not cope with the crowds. Heard a Sloth went for a swim the other day too!! Baby Babirusa hilarious following it's mother and copying everything she did - from wallowing in the mud pool to scratching it's rump on the same tree trunk very amusing!

Heard the zoo wants to keep the tiger cubs for Islands - how long would they be able to stay in with mum and dad??? Is this a feasable option I wonder as could be another 3 years?

Loved Dinosaurs - a great exhibit. Made me wonder how that whole space could be used once the Dinos go. If they are coming back next year then no worries but that area would make an amazing animal walkthrough exhibit with such great planting etc - with a bit of modification could be a fab lemur walkthrough?? I know this has been done to death by so many other zoos but it would be really popular none the less as I reckon only 1% of visitiors see the lemurs now. Thoughts???

All in all another great day - the Zoo seems to be going from strength to strength.

....Forgot to mention does anyone know what is being done in RORA? The corner aviary is being refurbished - wondered if any ideas on what is being done here? Also a great update to one of the Maginficant Macaw aviarys with the glass being replaced with fine mesh and incredible lush planting. The other side is yet to be updated - does anyone know if there are plans to do this too? It certainly needs it as the Blue Throated Macaws look like they are in a prison cell compared to their neighhours who are residing in luxury in comparison!

Unlikely... Upto the studbook really, but given there's currently a waiting list for this species (plus Kirana is one of the top cats in the studbook in terms of genetics) I'd be very suprised if either stayed any later than 2013
Prehaps "if" they have another litter in the next couple of years then one can stay to make up the proposed second pair for Islands...

Must admit I do agree with Shavingtonzoo on items for sale in the shop I was wondering are poundland sponsoring the shop.
A top quality Zoological collection like Chester is should have ashop of good quality items not tat like most of the items are at the moment

Guys I'm going to have to disagree with you on the shop front, it's certainly not "full of tat" - if you want tat I'll point you towards the Blue Planet's shop for comparison.
The shop is divided into 2 sides - one side definately caters for kids and their needs and the other is aimed at adults.
So with the kids the best sellers where the zoo will always make money are the cuddly toys and the other themed toys. For the adults there seems to be a veriatble cornucopia of different tastes from bespoke jewellery, to art prints, to some quite clever recycled items, to zoned areas catering to garden lovers, travel bugs, sofa safari people and the general collector.
With regards to books - they are certainly not in one area anymore but they are still there. They are to be found in different areas and the zoo look to have selected books to match whatever topic area they are placed with, so I have seen a couple of excellent safari companions, a few copies of safari stories kind of thing (Bookey Peek etc) and novels along the lines of Michael Morpugeo (excuse spelling).
In terms of books for me - I agree the old zoo shop had lots of nice animal books - all well thumbed and read - I wouldn't buy them even if I wanted one purely because they wern't pristine - and there in lies the problem in selling books - would you really pay £25 for a good hardback book that been on the shelf for a while and picked up and read by loads of visitors? I wouldn't, I'd order it pristine from Amazon or the like!
So I think the zoo have targetted their books for the general public rather than the specialist and rightly so as that is indeed where the majority of their funds will come.
To finish my ramble - the new shop is 100% better than the old one, I have spent more in there since it opened a month or so ago than I did in the whole of last year in the old one - that's got to say that the contents are worth it - OR you're going to accuse me of buying tat and for that I invite you to step outside :D

They have to sell what makes a profit, no good having expensive books gathering dust in the gift shop if you can buy them cheaper on Amazon. For lots of families, a day out at the zoo is a fairly expensive exercise and all young kids want a gift or a toy at the end, so selling the cheaper products is sometimes the only way some folks can treat their kids to a gift at the end of the zoo trip (and good on the zoo for selling this I say). Also kids have a habit of breaking things so why buy them something expensive to break!? There is also some good quality stuff for sale too for children and adults. I went in a Poundland shop once and promised myself never to return to such squalor. Chester’s new shop is nothing like that at all. I bought my one year old nephew a good quality growth chart with lovely illustrated animals on it and quality pair of little tiger style slippers!. I think it is a really good move having free entry to the shop too, not so sure about free elephant access for all though. However the new entry ‘thing’ where they check at your tickets /memberships is very peculiar to me and I feel sorry for the lads and girls who have to do that job for more than a coupe of hours a day in any weather.

Tiger cubs will normally stay with the female up until about a year or possibly two I really much doubt that both will stay as Kirana is a good genetic female to breed from as her father 'Tenang' is an Oz import.

Re: Okapis

There has been some speculation regarding Stuma's rather large belly of late, Dicky's a proven male siring two calves so far his first was an unknown female at London in 2008 who died after a probable diarrhea problem and Rab who in late last year/early this year moved to Germany (Stuttgart?).

Stuma has never bred so far in her life having arrived as a young female in 2005 from a German Zoo. She's a very stubborn female apparently so Chester would be lucky if they got her breeding and it'd be there first ever Okapi calf. AFAIK Stuma is the only female ever held at Chester with the rest being males (Kiburi, Dicky and Mbuti) I believe they were holding them for Woburn until some new regulations came into place.

I appreciate the need for turnover in the shop, but the zoo surely also has a role to educate.

And decent quality books in the shop is one way of doing it.

I can understand the way the zoo is moving (slick & commercial etc) but preferred the older approach!

Should still be two Okapi, they do occasionaly have one or both off show from time to time though... maybe you just caught them on one of these days

Both were onshow today, very efficiently browsing from the vegetation in their paddock.

And looks like the Agouti will be unlikely to move in with the Sloths as there a fears they are too timid and will not cope with the crowds.

The signs for the agouti in SotJ have been removed, so that wouldn't surprise me.

Regarding the shop.

Why would anyone want to buy some crappy photo print of animals that dont even belong to the zoo?
[not talking about pencil drawings, but real pics!]

I find it hard to believe you're actually being serious here or have visited anywhere with the standard of gardening the zoo once had (at this time of year, Abbeywood, Bodnant, Ness etc). Everything that is in flower at the moment was planted years ago, there is absolutely no horticultural merit in anything the current team has planted. With the possible exception of the orchids, all of the zoo's plant collections have suffered greatly in recent years.

my feelings exactly!!! The zoo has plenty of spectacular animals that could feature in the prints like on the new magnets. I also have a problem with the zoo selling pics/cuddly toys of animals that are not in the zoo, for example the Leopard bags??? how would that remind you of visiting Chester Zoo

Thirded.
I collect magnets from the collections I visit, but the magnet has to have the name of the collection and has to be of an animal at the collection, and that does not include stock images of a species held at the collection.

I also will only let my children get cuddlys with the same conditions, or stationary that bares the collection name.

Chester's new photo Magnets are the animals from the zoo :) including the beautiful Kirana
:D

We gave Chester Zoo the chance of selling pics of all the animals.
Professional quality, printed , mounted etc etc

Sent them a range of samples.

THEY DID NOT EVEN HAVE THE COURTESY TO REPLY !

We didnt quote prices, but to be honest, we were not looking to make any profit and would have been happy to donate all proceeds to the zoo!

I am sure there are other members who could have contributed great pics as well.

Can only assume that the team have another agenda.

No, quite simply because we where submitting a selection of images at that stage.

We found Chester Zoo`s lack of interest puzzling, to say the least.

It is the Zoos loss, not ours!
