Chester Zoo Chester circa 1991

Slightly going off the topic of crocodiles, wht are the plans for the tropical realm in the masterplan. With African animals surrownding it (chimps, okapis, buffalos, red river hogs),turning it into n african themed rainforest house would be a brillint idea.

That is true, but it could also be a "passageway" into South America, seeing as when you leave the tropical realm you come out by the Buffy-Headed Capuchins and the macaws and you are facing spirit of the jaguar.

Perhaps the realm could be split into an African zone and a South American Zone?

It is on the plans I've seen, but that's just the building. I've no idea about whether the content of the realm will change.

Does anyone know whats happeing to the sand lizards??

They are very out of place arent they. Very rarely d i see them so i dont see the harm in placing them off-show and setting up another aviary on where the lizards are now.

Perhaps even to an area by the british garden, so the visitors will make the connection that they are native...

As far as I know the sand lizard enclosure is staying put. It's not so long ago that much of the sand was replaced. I agree the lizards are very difficult to spot, so as an exhibit it's not really a success. When it first opened people seemed to be expecting an animal as big as a Kpmodo dragon given the size of the enclosure.

I've had people coming up to me asking where the Tuataras are in their exhibit expecting someting similar ;)

It's badly ot of place next to capuchins and macaws. the new sand is a sign though that they're not leaving an time soon.

Sand Lizards are easier to see in the wild (in the few areas of Britain where they are found that is..) than in any of the zoo enclosures housing them. I've never seen one in Chester's enclosure or any of the others zoos e.g. Marwell/Jersey that have them.
