Chester Zoo Chester in 2013 #1

Visited a very busy Chester. Managed to see Napo the new Jaguar and Majorie the Malayan Tapir who was having lots of fun chasing the Pigeons in her outdoor enclosure. No sign of Goshi the new female Jaguar, but was told by a keeper she is quite shy and is yet to venture out much. Did notice a poster advertising something called Bugs a new attraction for the summer which looks like it will be this years alternative to the dinosaurs. Also noticed that flowers had been placed near the memorial for Richard Hughes on the twelve anniversary of his tragic death.

I think Bugs will be animatronic insects.

Goshi - the new female jaguar - 3 questions

Trying to find out 3 things about Goshi- the new female jaguar. How old is Goshi ? Also which zoo did she come from in France ? What are the names of her parents ? Thank you

She was born at Beauval in April 2012 - can't help with parents names, sorry

Thank you for the info on Goshi !

I had heard that she was just 10 months old but a flickr contact expressed surprise that she was taken away from her family at such an early age. Just wanted to confirm her age. Each individual animal is different for the age when we move them. So so looking forward to seeing her next Saturday on my birthday weekend !

she is 10 months confirmed by keeper, thought that was young myself she does look very kittenish still

Goshi- family background

Mum appears to be a black jag and dad a fawn one - she appears to be one of 3 triplets (all black) born April 9 2012. Lovely photo of her dad and mum on zoo de beauval's facebook post of 17 0ctober 2012 !

I have high hopes for her - she is a feisty lady and already showing Napo who is boss - on their first meeting outside in the enclosure on thursday morning she backed him off the top of the tree with a well coordinated warning and he fell slap into the pond, right under the water it was a proper dunking - if ever a Jaguar looked totally pissed off then that was the moment as he surfaced spluttering from the icy water! :O)

Visitor numbers ? -for 2012?

How many visitors did the zoo receive in 2012 and how did this compare with numbers for 2011? Guessing that figures for 2012 only released in 2013 hence my post under 2013 thread. Thanks

BBC Documentry, The Planners will feature Chester's Islands application when it airs on Thursday 7th March (BBC2, 8PM)

Just reading the zoo magazine, anyone know where the Nature reserve is going, and the rough size it is going to e, this is the first I have heard of it

Was at the zoo on friday. Does anyone know what is wrong with the female Spectacled Bear? She had 2 very large bald patches on her back and bum. There wasn't anyone around to ask.
Also, on the way out I was looking at the map by the cafe, and noticed that the Banteng are listed as being in the old Bongo paddock. This was the only part of the zoo I didn't visit. :(

Franka the Female Spectacled Bear has been having a fur loss issue on and off for a wee while, I have asked when I've met up with one of the keepers and been reassured that health wise she's fine and it's nothing to be very concerned over. It might be hormonal for instance but the keepers are on the case and she's OK. Did you notice if the little wire fence was dividing the larger enclosure - i.e. has Sangay been given access to her again - I like to hope for Bear Cubs :O)

Congratulations again to Chester Zoo for yet another birth on a rare and beautiful mammal. I'll be going up to see it in 5 weeks time :D

Thanks for the info. I'm glad she's ok, it was quite a shock, as I've not seen her like that before. The wire fence was still in place when I visited.
I'd love to see bear cubs too :D Hopefully one day we will.
